There have been some strong sales of signed rookies on ebay the last week

I'm always watching the sales of signed rookie cards as I love to buy/sell/trade them, so it's good information to stash away in the back of my mind for future reference. I particularly enjoy seeing strong sales of cards that I already have, as most people probably enjoy seeing the stuff they own bringing in good prices.

Here are a few examples of cards that have sold this past week (not mine):

1969 Kareem Abdul Jabbar $970.33
1957 Don Drysdale $380
1965 Tony Perez $242.60
1978 Trammell & Molitor $177.71
1958 Cepeda $161.50
1975 Jim Rice $157.50
1961 Billy Williams $128.50
1975 Gary Carter $96.99

None of these are hard to come by, and none were graded or authenticated. They all had pretty good eye appeal. It's encouraging to see. I hope the strong prices continue (except for on the stuff I want to buy of course image )

Well that makes me WAY happier about the Jabbar I got last week! image
  • The price for the Rice is insane.I was getting these signed for $15 a pop back in November. The cards themselves can be had for $3-$5 each at the card shop or monthly show.I guess I should have stocked up.

  • I also have been keeping track of signed rookie sales for a couple years now and these prices are completely out of wack! For example, the past 3 1961 Topps signed Billy Williams sales have been= $19, $30 + $35. And thats for AUTHENTICATED cards! The closing sales on these cards from this past week is definitly NOT the norm and not what these cards usually go for. The reason for these OUTRAGEOUSLY inflated prices I feel is probably the condition of the cards which even though ungraded apear to be nm/mt, while the majority of signed Rookies are more towards Ex condition than Gem Mint condition,IMHO

Did Hall of Fame week have anything to do with it?

After all this past week was when the HOF was in the news.

    Steve
    Good for you.
  • I think autographed RC's are going to be worth more in the long run than insert autos....

Would love to get my Elgin Baylor 1961 Fleer RC signed in person, I would be too scared to mail it to him!
  • I don't think the HOF affected it that much because, I sold a nm Rice Rookie Auto already authenticated and slabbed when he first got announced to be inducted and it sold for only $80 which is fine for me since it was free anyways and it was a double, but usually the market is a little more active when a player first gets the word that they are going into the Hall compared to when the actual ceremony takes place. ALL of the cards mentioned above were sold from the SAME seller and I think that maybe had more to do with it than the Hall. But I think that maybe the high prices for these was based on conveinience for the buyer, because maybe they saw a ton of rookies autos for sale and instead of waiting for other auctions to pop up decided to spend a ton right then and there. For instance the 1960 Topps Frank Howard Auto was originally listed for $9.99 and DIDN'T sell the first time around, but after this seller got more increased traffic thru his listings with the more auto's he listed, that same Howard actaully sold and it was for Twice that price!

Wish I had some money to actually sink into this sort of stuff. I have my own small humble collection and still working on them.
    1951 Bowman Monte Irvin
    1952 Bowman Gil McDougald
    1952 Topps Ralph Houk
    1953 Topps Andy Carey
    1956 Topps Luis Aparicio
    1957 Topps Frank Robinson
    1957 Topps Whitey Herzog
    1957 Topps Jim Bunning
    1957 Topps Lindy McDaniel
    1957 Topps Bill Mazeroski
    1959 Topps Sparky Anderson
    1960 Topps Willie McCovey
    1961 Topps Billy Williams
    1961 Topps Juan Marichal
    1962 Topps Gaylord Perry
    1963 Topps Manny Mota
    1965 Topps Bert Campaneris
    1965 Topps Tony Perez
    1966 Topps Fergie Jenkins
    1966 Topps Bobby Murcer
    1966 Topps Don Sutton
    1966 Topps Jim Palmer
    1968 Topps Johnny Bench
    1969 Topps Graig Nettles
    1971 Topps Greg Luzinski
    1971 Topps Ken Singleton
    1975 Topps Jim Rice
    1978 Topps Paul Molitor

Then of course I have plenty of guys from the 80s on up. I enjoy doing them too. Its a fun challenge.

Right now the only response I am waiting for as far as rookies are concerned is Bobby Richardson.

The ones I hope to have knocked down within the next year are Skowron, Brooks Robinson, Bob Gibson, Orlando Cepeda, Carl Yaz, Phil Niekro, Steve Carlton, Jim Bouton, Bob Uecker, Rod Carew, Reggie Jackson, Steve Garvey, Gary Carter, Robin Yount, George Brett, Dale Murphy, Andre Dawson, Fred Lynn, Dennis Eckersley, Bruce Sutter, Lou Brock, Harmon Killebrew, Tony Kubek, Dave Winfield

Guys like Ryan, Rose, Seaver, Kaline, Banks, Aaron are very much on the backburner.

Then guys like Murray, Schmidt, and Colavito...well, I suppose if the time is right. Colavito seems pretty elusive as is Sandy Koufax whom I never expect to get but you never know. Same with Mays.

I think I just saw a Jim Hunter unauthenticated finish just about 200?

There's some merit to that. I never would have even bothered looking for the 8 cards that I've bought from that seller this week, except that I saw them in his "other items" while looking at the good stuff. I even bought the Howard you wrote about and still think it's a good deal at the price I paid. Some of his combo signed cards went nuts (IMO) as well.

    1962 Mays/Mantle $734.24
    1964 Aaron/Mays $449.24
    1959 Ashburn/Mays $426.00

Yep, that Hunter was a bargain at that price. That's a tough card to find. One of my friends picked that one up. Nice card at a good price.

If you'll pay anything close to what that one sold for, then I'll sell you mine:

You can even see photos from the day it was signed here:

Day I met Kareem Abdul Jabbar

I'd be more than happy to sell it to you, BUT, if you want to save some $$$, just buy the card unsigned and send it to Kareem through the mail. He's been accomodating people lately.

    Mike,
your right on about those combos! And I din't mean to say the Howard went for too much I was just using that one card as an example, I still think it is a Very good price for someone who doesn't sign ttm and occasionally at shows and yes you def did get a good deal, and congrats on the pickups btw,
