That Clemente rookie is perfection...to me. Great centering, in a low-mid grade. That's the difficulty on eBay...there's a shortage of lower grade with good centering. The hunt continues.
I really didn't pick up anything worth writing home about. I did almost complete my Brooks Robinson raw "set", picked up a couple over-priced Ripkens, an '09 A&G box, and several jersey/auto cards for my friend's 10 year old. I also subbed 22 cards to PSA (C.C. Special).
Just got home a couple hours ago from the National. Had a great time, here are my pickups:
For My Post War HOFers Set
For My Top 200 Sports Cards Set
For My newly started Clemente Basic Set (The 61 and 73 Clemente's were purchased a couple days in advance of the National, from Mickey71,but were waiting for me when I got home tonight, so I threw them in with the scans).
Just curous - how were the prices on cards - especially the 8s. And was it crowded in the isles?

------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Here are my findings: 1) Crowd was fairly sparse on Friday from 11 am to 4:30 p.m. Only a few tables had heavy action. (at least in comparison to past years) 2) Not alot of pre-60's graded football. Baseball dominated probably around 75%/25% I think that this is just a reflection of reality...vintage football is MUCH MUCH more scarce than baseball. (and baseball has higher demand) 3) There were more SGC graded cards than ever before, but PSA still dominated. 4) ALOT of raw cards...which iI won't even consider..but thats just me. 5) I think pricing was typical...some were ridiculously high, but there were deals to be had. I went with the notion of only buying cards that were priced "right." I was able to get fairly low prices on some nice cards. The 51 Bowman Stautner is a pretty tough card to find in decent shape. Picked it up for $100 in SGC 7. I picked up the 51 Bowman Otto Graham for $160 in SGC 7. Try to find a nicely centerd one for under $200..usually $250 plus when you can find one. The 51 Tunnell RC was also $160..whcih for a perfectly centered SGC 7.5 I thought was a steal. Finally the Van Buren 52 Large i picked up for $150...again try to find a decently centered PSA 6 for $150...so again I would say deals were to be had.
6) I overheard two dealers talking and they said that it seemed that low end and high end were selling very well.....but cards in the 6 and 7 range were not. Not sure why???...thats what I bought???
7) I thoroughly enjoyed looking at MOSH's card at Mint States table . The 52 large were incredible!!
8) Pricing on Football HOF RC's was High...I think the registry set is driving some insane prices. I know some dealers were not budging on their prices on them. 9) Seemed like alot less dealers and especially alot less autograph dealers. 10) The admisison price and parking is ridiculous in my opinion. spent $18 for admission and $8 for parking....and food prices...hot dogs and hamburgers selling for filet prices. I would have went back Sunday for a round 2..but I decided not to mainly because of the parking/admission fee. Knowing myself, I probobly would have dumped 500+ more on Sunday...so it definately was a deterrant for me.
11) One of the few times I can honestly say...thank God I live in Cleveland! I am blessed being only 10 minutes from the IX center.
As for the great demand for low and high end....maybe an obvious thought on my part but I see low end grades being the best bargain for a collector looking to own vintage items with decent eye appeal, high end cards obviously for the spenders and investors.
<< <i>Just curous - how were the prices on cards - especially the 8s. And was it crowded in the isles? >>
Ryan (BigDaddyBowman) really sums the show up very well. I heard very similar things from the dealers I spoke with, especially in regards to the purchasing habits of the attendees. Low end and extreme high end were selling well. Everything in between wasnt. One thing that really bothered me was the amount of RAW vintage for sale at PSA 8 prices, but in PSA 4 and PSA 5 like grade.
I went to the show with a very open mind, and was not willing to overpay for any cards. I wanted to purchase at or around recent EBAY closing prices. I was hoping to come away with 5 key cards this year (55 Killebrew PSA 8, 57 Frank Robinson PSA 8, 49 Bowman Musial PSA 7, 52 Bowman Musial PSA 8 and 53 Bowman Color Musial PSA 7) and only found one of them within those pricing paremeters, so I started looking for deals on cards that I have wanted/needed for some of my sets. I was able to pick up the 57 Brown in PSA 7 for $450, 58 Clemente Yellow Letters for $450 and probably my best deal was a purchase and flip at the show. I bought a Clemente 64 PSA 8 for $300 and flipped it for the 70 and 72 Clemente PSA 8's and $150 cash.
The show was a great time, I had a blast with fellow board members Bporter26 and Samspop. It was great meeting Mknez, Paleocards, Bottom9th and OnefastTalon at the show. Im already looking forward to next year in Baltimore!
I had a great time at the National this year. I met a bunch of board members and they are all great guys. It was a privelege to meet all of you. I hope we'll see each other again in Baltimore next year.

Last card I picked up.
Goes nicely with my other one, on this POP 2 card...
So now all I ask, is please people, don't submit anymore of this card to PSA for grading
I also picked up a box of 1983 Topps Football from BBCE that I haven't opened yet... can't wait to get home from work tonight!
Matt - you picked up some really nice cards!
I've talked to so many people from this and other forums but have met only a few.
I wish I can make another national and meet more of you.
A pleasure...
