1971 TOPPS Registry Football - down to 2 needed!

I've been collecting the tough 1971 TOPPS PSA Football set. I have 261/263 graded now and only need 2 more!
If anyone has #28 Lionel Aldridge or # 138 Paul Guidry in *** PSA 8 only ***, I will pay TOP $$$ for them.
Let me know....

    my t-205's

looking for low grade t205's psa 1-2
  • Great Job on the Beautiful 71 set.

Both cards in PSA holders should be easy enough to find on ebay.

Im just past the halfway point on my SGC 71 Set.

I have the Aldridge and currently have the Guidry submitted for grading. Here are a few more of my favorites from the set.
Do you have pics of your set you can show?

Good Luck on a fantastic set and one to be proud of.

  • I'll try to get out my digital camera and take some pictures..
And if I can figure out how to post them....lol
    Thanks...
p.s. Don't you just love the colors on the '71 set?

  • I will keep an eye out for the two cards. Im hopeing the Guidry I Submitted gets 88 or better.
If it does I might be able to pick up another nice one if you wanted to submit it.

Yes the 71 is one of the most colorful and beautiful sets of all time. If the Roger Staubach roookie had
come out a year earlier in the 71 set it would be the greatest Topps set of all-time.
Im working on a SGC 88 or better set, but I still maintain a nice Raw set as well. Its just so much easier
to pull out and view the cards as well as being able to touch and smell them. AGGGHHHHH. The sweet
    smell of bubble gum cards.
As beautiful as they present in the slabs, they just seem to lose the nostalgic smell and feel of the raw set.

The 71 and 72 Topps Football sets are my all-time favorites. We spent countless hours as kids with early seventies
football sets and the 71 and 72 will forever be etched in my childhood memories. Both sets are very dear to my heart
and I will always be a collector of them.

Im currently 25 cards short on my PSA 8,9,10 1972 Topps Football set. Many of the cards were my own subs from my lifelong set.
Yes I have poured some coin into the set. I know how ya feel being so close to finishing a set you can taste it!
The Biggest cards I need are #104 Ron Yary RC, #162 Emmit Thomas RC, #265 Ron Yary AP, #316 Rayfield Wright RC and
    #348 George Blanda IA.
Ive seen the Yary Rookie PSA 9 many times but refuse give the ridiculous price they often want for it. Same with the Emmit Thomas.
Ill wait till the population grows and pushes the inflated price back down to reasonable levels.

Heres a few of my favorite 72's

A scanner is really the only way to go for nice pics. Digital camera just can't get the kind of clarity you need.
  • what kind of scanner do you guys use
  • Others opt for the fancy high price scanners and all. I personally have used a cheap Canon from Wal-mart and gotten
just as nice as results. The key is to scan at 200 dpi. Open the scan in Paint shop Pro (Or other photo editor).
Then resize the scan to 300-400 to 500. depending on how big you want it. Most work extremely well on the mesage boards
at 250 to 350. The 72's I posted above I think are resized at 400. Just a hint big for this board.
  • Ill try it thanks for the info
  • Thanks for the info. Bigreddog.
I've been on vacation and am just getting back to sorts.
    I do have a scanner (all in 1). It's okay...not great/not bad.
I just received some containers to put my graded cards into so I will have my collection out tonight.
I'll scan some pictures and post them afterward.

I agree with you that the 1971 set was fun collecting as a kid, it was my favorite football cards growing up.
Too bad I didn't keep any as a kid! But at least now with the power of the internet, you can collect
cards fairly inexpensively GRADED from your past.

  • Great Pics jhs!
    Just gotta love them 71's
I agree that the internet has made it easier to build /collect a set.
As for doing it inexpensively, I don't know about that.
Exactly where are you getting PSA 8's inexpensively?
Centering can be tough on the 71's. Ive probably paid too much for
the centering, but hey! Its just Money!

Any Luck finding them last two cards?

A few more from the set Im building. I still need the Greene and Wherli

  • Bigreddog, I forgot to mention that your cards are great looking.
Also, the 1971's USED to be fairly cheap on Ebay..but not too cheap the last year or two.
I got lucky and watched the Buy-It-Now and found some cheap (Got the Wherli for about $35).
Also had to pay a lot for some tough commons..win some loss some I guess.
Just getting close to the end is kind of nice and will keep some money in my bank account while times
    are getting tight.
I have located the 2 cards I need in RAW, but have not submitted them to PSA. I'd rather find them graded already..
Will keep watching out for them.....
    THANKS

Good Luck on the two cards if you do submitt them.

I'll wait on the Wehrli and the Charlie Sanders cards.
Both are WAY overpriced at this time because of their recent HOF inductions.
Both cards will come back down to reasonable levels once the
HOF RC registry and possible Player Registry nuts are done scrambling and
    paying stupid prices for both.

  • I sold a psa 8 Wehrli for 166.00 to some guy in australia. I had the card and got it graded and came back an 8 So i had to sell it for that crazy price
  • Heatmizer,

Don't blame you a bit for takin a $166 for a Wherli card.
The pops will go up and the hype will wear off. I'll look to pick one up then.
    $30-40 Tops .
  • I just back from PSA today 214 Jim Bakken graded PSA 8 which a tough one to get

I'm a fan of this set too. Great cards guys, both PSA and SGC. Real beauties.

I've always felt that the L. Aldridge card was difficult in high grade too. I never see nice examples even here in Wisconsin. I see lot's of Ex-Mt Aldridge cards but never any Nm-Mint ones.

That Bakken is tough too. Congrats on getting your 8.

Series one uncut sheet : Aldridge is an edge card (third row from the bottom, right side) which might explain why it's tough to get in high grade. ***scan courtesy of jmoran a member here***

  • Heatmizer, I got lucky on the Bakken too, I sent a RAW one in and got a PSA 8. That was a really tough card and they are never for sale.

Great un-cut sheet, I've seen it before. I believe there is another different sheet too.
Bigreddog, did you get your submits back yet?

  • Bigreddog,,
MY PSA submits came back as "minimum size not met"..!!!!
I bought 2 from different dealers and they both were short? Sounds fishy...
Anyway, if you still have the Guidry, I'll pay you for it...

    Thanks
