Me either? Is Kotchman good? I have no idea and really in all honesty where is he going to play? They are going to have to make room for VMart trading Laroche doesn't really do that. I see a big gigantic hole in the bullpen right now! Who else can give you 2 or 3 innings out there?
We have three older guys...Varitek...Big Papi....Lowell who need a rest down the stretch. These older guys will also have someone breathing down their neck.
I thought maybe we got extra 1st basemen to trade for the 1st baseman from San Diego, but that doesn't look like it's going to happen.
Nice job by the Red Sox landing Victor Martinez. That could be the key for them.
The reason LaRoche was traded and not Kotchman was salary. I believe nearly 3 mill difference between LaRoche and Kotchman. Kotchman is better defensively but LaRoche is a MUCH better hitter.
I'm not excited. So we get a backup catcher who isn't great defensively and hits ok, nothing special. However, it does allow us to rest the old guys more, so that is very good, and yes, Masterson is a great guy, but we have many arms in the pen now.
nothing special? Varitek is on his last legs and Martinez is one hell of a good hitter and RBI man. The trade for Kotchman gets you a better hitter, but not a homerun threat, I assume he is better defensively than Laroche.
I like the trade for VMart, but I can't understand Kotchman. Francona is going to have his hands full juggling the lineup. Now I guess we are one short in the bullpen?
I was really hoping for Gonzalez, but Martinez will do. I think he is better than an "ok" hitter. Last year was terrible, but in 2007 he hit .301 with 25 homers. I'd take that kind of output from a backup catcher/backup 1b/backup DH any day.
I thought the Kotchman deal was perplexing too, but no more so than getting Laroche for Kotsay. (It all seemed kind of unnecessary.) And like someone else mentioned, when I heard about the deal, I was hoping they did it so they could package Kotchman in a deal for Gonzalez.

This will not sit well with the competition.

Angels are trying to get Halladay still.

Masterson was a decent guy but expendable IMO.

Kind of a boring trading deadline IMO.
