1963 ?D? Quarter found in change.

Standing at the cashier, counting my money out, I noticed a certain ping... image It was silver! Only bad thing was I had just enough on me for my purchase and had to spend the thing for face... I told the cashier, a nice guy I talk to all the time what it was and he said he collected Jeffersons. image

He must have been a casual collector because he had no idea about the silver content i coinage prior to 65...

I smiled and said I would bring him in a book.

This is the second time Ive had to spend silver at a store... I hate that!

Was it an essential purchase? If it were nonessential, I would've just put the purchase off until later.

That's probably because he collects Jeffersons image
  • You didnt happen to know the cashier did you? if so I would have had them put it aside for you and come back later. That terrible news Jamie sorry to hear about it. What was the condition of the coin?

Uh, '63-S? No such thing. Maybe you meant either '53-S or '63-D?

    Finally! image
  • Maybe it was a 63-D. I knew it was silver and saw the mint mark quickly. I thought it said a S, but it could have been a D... Grade wise maybe mid AU. Like I said though, just a quick glance. (Im not a Washington guy.)

Yea, it was a must have purchase.

The cashier collects and after telling him what it was, I saw him stash it in the register, he owns the place. image

No worries though, its a case of catch and release.

Yeah it sucks I had to do it with a mercury dime one time, oh well hopefully another collector got it
  • One did, the clerk. As soon as I told him it was silver he pulled it aside. I didnt want it to get mixed in with the dreck...

Oh well, something gained, something lost.

  • Why in the first place would you carry silver coins in your change pocket...image
  • I got cash from the g/f and had just enough with me. She got it in change and I didnt check it before going to the store. I didnt hear the ping until I was at the register and paying for my stuff. Normally I check all coins before they get spent or turned in at the bank, this was one of the very few times I havent since becoming a coin collector. image And its when I have just enough and one of them is silver.
