Opinion on this CN Cent.....

relicsncoinsrelicsncoins Posts: 7,955 ✭✭✭✭✭
The photos are accurate as to color and luster and surfaces. Would you consider it problem free, do you think it would slab, and what grade would you assign it. I will give my opinion after some responses so as not to sway your opinion one way or the other. If you were going to sell this piece would you leave it raw or slab it?

Strong and even strike. Complete denticles. A couple minor rims bumps.
    Toning spot on the 'R'.
I would send it for slabbing.
Whether it would....anything can go 91 these days. (deserving or not)
    I'd say 65.
  • I sure see no major distractions; I don't think they'd knock off much, if anything, for those rim dings. The surfaces look all original - I'd send it to be graded. MS65, but wouldn't a 6 be fantastic?!
I look forward to your opinion.
Have bought and sold on BST, many references available when asked.

Depends how it looks in hand. 64 easy. 65 on a good day - unlikely to be a 66.

The area over T in UNITED looks worked on - are the flow lines missing there after a spot was removed??

Possibly lightly cleaned, but I think it would slab. My guess is MS64. Small knick on the rev next to the E, a tiny bit of chatter on the face and in front of the portrait, otherwise a nice looking coin.

There are 3 areas on the obv that look like they might have been spots that were worked on. (T of united, R of America, between 8-6 of date)

But I'm not 100% sure if those were natural light spots or ones that were worked on. I'd give it a shot at grading and see what they say. It's a nice coin, it's either going to be a decent grade or a gennie.

Here is my thoughts on it. The color, who knows these days. Excellent strike for a CN cent. The luster is above average. The obverse is uncirculated and would likely grade 64. The reverse appears to have some cabinet friction and very slight at that, but it is there none the less. Technically there is a few ever so slight luster breaks on a couple of the highest points on the reverse. It would be interesting to see what the graders would say. The coin is 63 to 64, but the ever so slight friction might send it to an AU58 holder.

Well.....IMHO it will come back "genuine" cleaned.

There is not a hair line on the coin. Dipped maybe, but then it would come back as questionable color if it wasn't deemed acceptable.

Slab it, of course. It will go for much more if it grades.

I like it. I suspect it has been cleaned. I don't believe there's tooling. PCGS is as likely to slab it as to BB it (genuine).

That's a very very nice 1863, well struck, great luster, looks original, and I don't believe those are "rim bumps" - it looks more like minor cuds which is very common for the copper nickels. My main concern would have been if there were hairlines because you can't see those in photos, but you already said there were none, so that's very good. Don't see any major nicks really just the one on the reverse, and it doesn't look dipped at all to me, otherwise it would have more even lighter/brighter (more white) toning and less luster. There is a little bit of uneven reddish toning/staining on the obverse and a couple carbon specks too so it might be downgraded for that, so my guess is MS63, possibly MS64. Very pretty copper nickel piece.
