Has this forum costed or saved you money, overall?

There so much information here. some good. some bad... how do you perceive the effect so far ?!

  • I'd say it saved me a ton, but then also costed me a ton.

The way it saved me money (as a new collector in Feb 09) the forum taught me what actually has value and what doesn't. This is especially valuable if your just starting out and don't know if your getting a good deal or just getting ripped.

But. at the same time it costed me a ton. Thanks to this forum my interest in coins has never been higher and unfortunately that burns a hole in the wallet image

I will say this, these forums and specifically the ones for the Liberty Seated collectors have greatly enhanced my knowledge and appreciation of my series.

The biggest help is that I can share with people who actually give a rats #$% about coins. I have no friends who collect to share my joys with. So I use my surrogate coin community family for that purpose.
If I say something in the woods, and my wife isn't around. Am I still wrong?

It's both cost me money and saved me money.
Before the forum, I bought a few off-brand or raw items that I likely overspent by a little.
However, being a cheapass, I didn't lose a whole lot.

Being on the forums, and trying to learn all I can, I have also become interested in many different aspects and types of coins, so I have spent money that I would not have spent before, because my interest was piqued here. I have also become more comfortable with spotting issues and grading, to a degree, in a few series, so, I am more comfortable buying raw to a higher value than before.

Before the forum, I think the most I spent on any single coin was probably close to $75. Now, it has been closer to $3000. Still not a drop in the bucket compared to many on the forum, but to me it was a large move up. I prefer the $50-$300 coins though, for our collections.

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

I voted that it costs me more - but I won't change a thing! I have learned so much and will continue to learn and appreciate the forum.

However, I have bought a lot of coins from people here that I probably won't have bought. So in that sense, it is costing me money.
  • We shall see if this forum cost me money if they do what they did to the coinfacts. Honestly this forum has been great for me, I have learned a lot and met so many different characters. I would say that I would come to this forum again if I had it to do over again.

Forum got me to buy some coins that I would never have bought, with more good, than bad in that mix. Overall, a modest monetary positive.

Considering all, I've profited from the forum. At one time, I was entertained too.....I miss the OF.

I think I started off with the premise that this forum serves as a peer group which side-effect encourages purchases in excess of what you'd ever spend if you persued the hobby solo... In that case, the forums are indespensible as a conduit to generating new and more involved collectors, read that .. Cash in the Marketplace. Without this board, Id never have become as involved as I have in the hobby (albeit still a relatively low level of involvement compared to most, it'd probably be Zero without some sort of discussion outlet).

I think this is backed up by people spending more because of a widened interest. there have been quite a few type examples Ive collected after seeing samples on the boards. World coins, especially...
  • Well believe it or not my wife collected coins before we were together. I took an interest in it and ended up ruining her hobby. Before I knew anything about collecting coins I bought one of those "State Quarter Mania" sets off of one of those fancy rob you blind shop at home channels. I was robbed blind. Then I found this site and I can honestly say that for the most part people on here have helped me learn about the hobby. And that's something you can't put a price on. Especially when I was first starting out and people were telling me which books I needed to read. I also use this site to see what is on the verge of release at the mint and what people think about what's up and down. Now had I only been paying enough attention to buy that damn LP1 Lincoln set from the mint so I won't have to pay a couple hundred to get the 3 sets I need! Seems like I drift away from coins when I really need to pay attention. Same thing happened with the 2007 W burnished ASE and the ASE Anniversary set. I just need to be on here all the time!!!
Hey, Im new at this so cut me some slack!!

When I began collecting coins seriously, specifically PCGS graded coins, back in May of '05 I had no idea how "into it" I would become and this forum has a great deal to do with it. So, come to think of it, this forum has cost me a lot of money over the past four+ years, but definitely in a good and fun way.image

None of the options fit me. It has probably cost me some money overall because I have bought coins from fellow members I would not have (on the BST, I would never have met or seen those posts if I was not here)

I don't think it really saved me any money because the stuff that people usually overspend on are things I don't normally buy (Morgans come to mind here).

What the board has really provided is a major education and I've learned a ton of stuff about a variety of things. It has shown me many things that I never knew existed and likely never would have had I not joined the board, so in the long run it WILL cost me money...even if it really hasn't yet. Well, I guess actually it has, because my latest purchase, which I expect to be arriving in the mail sometime within the next couple of days, it put me over the $100 mark spent with members of the forum.

So, it cost me money. But I've never chased fads (and I hope will never fall into that sheep-like trance!)

I have had some great buys on here, 100 Coronas, Canadian $20's from 1967, a 1787 British Guinea at far better deals than I would have gotten elsewhere. So yeah, it has cost me money, but I am happy for it.
