Cards worth sending in on $4.50 special??

Just wondering what you guys think a card must be worth to send it in for the 4.50 special? i.e. is a '64 common worth it if it might be an 8? I'm just talking about a regular common, not a low pop common or anything. Thoughts, advice, etc...

Nice example. I just sent off my 4th and final sub of the month that included three 64 Topps commons that I think have a shot at an 8.

Bill and I discussed the other day how we each have about 200 cards pulled for specials like this. I only gave him a few to send in for me. I really should take better advantage of this though.

Figure out the value of an eight vs. value of a seven and decide on the risk factor. If your going to spend $6 to turn a $2 card into a $10 card it probably isn't worth your time. If there is a 50/50 chance you are going to turn a $2 card into a $1 card, again probably not worth it.

You really need to do your homework. Check out VCP's past sales listing. Do a quick past-sale search on Ebay. See what folks need on the registry. Figure out what an acceptable profit margin is for you, and go for it.

If it's for your own collection, then you only need to ask yourself "Is spending a $4.50 "slabbing fee" on this card I already own worth it, or would I be happier keeping it raw and spending the $4.50 on something else?"
