Just went on an ebay bender....

It's been awhile since I have posted here. Anyway, I switch off on hobbies and in the last few days have went back to coins. Mostly Proof sets as I have huge holes of years that I am missing. So tonight I ran across an auction for a set and then noticed that the seller was selling a ton of 70's-late 80's proof sets. I pulled up the pcgs price guide and bid away. The only rule was that I would only bid half of what the pcgs guide said the set was worth (except for the '71, I made the rule after that one). I got outbid on a few but this guy was selling so many of the same years that I managed to buy the ones I got outbid on for less than they went for when I lost them. The auctions were REALLY close together and were closing anywhere from 1 min. apart to multiple auctions closing seconds apart. Here's what I won and how much I paid compaired to the pcgs price guide. Also, how many people use the price guide to get their prices from? Here's the list:

1971-paid $4.68- pcgs $8.00
72-pd 2.25-8.00
73-pd 5.51-12.00
74-pd 2.89-13.00
74-pd 2.82-13.00 (I bought two of this year, this is how fast the auctions were going)
79-pd 3.38-10.00
81-pd 2.51-10.00
82-pd 1.80-8.00
83-pd 2.80-9.00
84-pd 1.75-10.00
85-pd 2.25-9.00
86-pd 5.50-12.00
87-pd 0.80-8.00
88-pd 2.75-10.00
89-pd 4.24-9.00

All coins are in origional case and boxes.

All told counting shipping i paid $62.43 and if the pcgs price guide is accurate the sets total value is $149. I don't think I did too bad. Also I am trying to justify this with myself so my wife wont kill me for going on a huge coin bender in the last few days. Any thoughts would be welcome. Sorry this was so long! Thanks- Clay

    Junk....Absolute Junk!!!

Just kidding, Those modern proof sets, even though not worth a lot are nice looking coins. They are not my cup of tea, but I don't begrudge anyone for collecting them.
Need a Barber Half with ANACS photo certificate. If you have one for sale please PM me. Current Ebay auctions
  • I usually only buy mint and proof sets and pcgs or ngs graded coins from ebay. Im just too paranoid about getting ripped (even though it could happen with the graded coins from what I hear). I knocked out a few of the missing ones. Now I gotta lay low for awhile.

  • I really don't see how you could go wrong at around $4 per set with shipping. That's always exciting when bidding on lots of stuff close together.
Heck, you got one set for 80 cents! Is that less than face value?

Sounds like a lot of fun for $62!

Edited to add - That's 91 cents face value for 80 cents! Cha-ching!

Also, how many people use the price guide to get their prices from?

IMO the accuracy of the PCGS price guides is off a double digit percentage on the high side compared to average retail value of many items.

  • That's what I wanted to hear. I was wondering how accurate they were. Also anyone know why they stop pricing at 2005?

  • Usually when I get burnt out on one hobby, I move to another. I collect Simpsons memorbelia and coins. Got burnt out on Simpsons and decided to go back to coins for awhile. One thing about coins is that if you can get some good deals, you can really never loose money on them. And my kids can maybe sell them off when they are old and get something for them.

You see what happens now when supply far *FAR* exceeds demand. There are millions and millions of proof sets out there that no one wants. Since they are after all 'very valuable proof coins'...very few have ever been disturbed (of course many have been broken up in search for high quality specimens to slab), but for the most part these proof sets from these years will be a dreg on the market for decades to come. No doubt some collector in 2189 will be thankful they have been preserved but as for now, you probably paid fair value.

Hope you enjoy all of them......personally, I think you'd be far better off with one high quality older certifed coin for that Sixty dollars. Quantity seldom takes the place of quality.
  • You did good as stated before cut the PCGS price in half so your right in the ball park...

PS I wish my benders were that cheap....

  • Im one of those kind of ppl that "has to have all" of something if it's made. I know alot of people on here aren't really into the whole "modern junk" thing. My deal was that I like to collect proof and mint sets and this was an opportunity to fill a bunch of holes for a relativly cheap price. It was a blast and that's what collecting is really all about anyway. I do have some older classic coins and I enjoy those too. But yes, my money probably would have been better spent on 1 high end coin. It was the heat of the moment and alot of fun around 1 in the morning.
