    Here is the range when comparing it to today's numbers. It was the way things were described before the numbers became the accepted way to grade.

    Unc -- 60 to 62
    Choice unc -- 63 to 64 or 65
    Gem unc -- 65 or 66 and above

    Choice = 63
    Gem = 65
    Superb Gem = 67

    Although I have no knowledge about the etylmology of choice, I presume it means something similar to hand selected, the best choice from a representative group of coins.

    That's interesting, because I see people describing "Choice XF" coins, etc. I guess maybe the word has lost its' original meaning along the way?

    ...of superior grade; "choice wines"; "prime beef"; "prize carnations"; "quality paper"; "select peaches"

    Choice Extremely Fine: EF45
    Choice About Uncirculated: AU58
    Choice Brilliant Uncirculated: MS63-64

    The "Choice" adjective has changed its MS numeric grading designation over time. At different times representing 65, 62-63, and 63-64.

    In numismatic terms it is no different of an adjectival descriptor than Select or Gem.

    Its use as a descriptor for MS coins actually came after its use for XF and AU coins. It effectively gained more meaning along the way, this may however have diluted and confused it's use.
