What were the major pattern auctions, aka which catalogs should I track down?

One major auction was the Bass pattterns. It was, as I recall, a Bowers and Merena auction but I don't recall precisely when it was...perhaps around 1999 or so?

Heritage had a big pattern auction on January 11 2009.

I am sure that the pattern experts will soon arrive with a lot more information.

I think that Boiler's got it!!!
PNG member, numismatic dealer since 1965. Operates a retail store, also has exhibited at over 1000 shows.
I firmly believe in numismatics as the world's greatest hobby, but recognize that this is a luxury and without collectors, we can all spend/melt our collections/inventories.

For small cents, the Cincinnati 1977 sale by Stacks is a good one too, although few were plated.

The 1971 ANA by Stack's is also a good one for cent patterns. Cataloged by Walter Breen.

Yes, you are correct. I distinctly remember the 1916 Walking Liberty Half Dollar pattern, and I believe he also had a pattern of a Mercury dime.
