    Got this info from here

Semi-Prooflike (SPL) - 1 to 2 inches, devices must be frosted
Prooflike (PL) - 2 to 4 inches of reflectivity
Deep Mirror Prooflike (DMPL) - More than 4 inches
Ultra Prooflike (UPL) - At least 8 inches

    I thought a DMPL was 6 inches?

Does the 'devices must be frosted' extend to the PL and DMPL? The reason I am asking is I was looking through my various 1879-S Morgans in my grading set and I have a PCGS MS 63 in an OGH that has superb mirrors as well as some frosting...but the frosting is broken a bit and the coin is accurately graded as a 63. Just trying to understand how it would grade today with the designations as they were not available back in the OGH days (if my info is correct). I could crack it and resubmit and see what PCGS says but we are talking about a 79-S here!

    Thanks!

What grade was not available in the OGH holder days?

The frostiness of the devices should no change the PL or DMPL grade. However it can add soem wonderful eye appeal and may help[ the overal grade. Be careful of luster breaks in the fields as that can really hurt the chances for the designation.

I stand corrected...I noticed your 81-O that is on the bst...nice coin! For some reason I had it in my mind that the PL and DMPL designations came about later than the rattler/OGH days.

Devices DO NOT need to be frosted to receive PL or DMPL desginations.

I believe PCGS' current standard for mirror depth on a DMPL is 8'', both sides of course.

NGC's standards are less strict for their DPL designation.

DMPL was 6 inches, PCGS has toughened

standard to the now 8 inches. I believe that this

was a good move and reflects what a true DMPL

    should really look like.
