A tough and unusual guess the grade...Early Franklin Medal. GRADE POSTED!

I have posted this picture before of this early Franklin/Montyon Medal. Well I had it graded and slabbed by NGC. This will be an interesting guess the grade.

Please take a guess and give some opinions. I will post a picture of the slab later.

Look down a few posts for grade.

  • Okay, this is totally outside of my comfort zone (but what isn't really), but I'm so utterly enraptured by those glorious curls that I'm going to offer a guess.

63 - hardly an educated guess

Good thing Ben was dead when this came out - check out the jowl depiction. Yikes!

Ben's got more chins than a Chinese phone book.

With the images provided, I see no evidence of rub or abrasion on the high relief of Montyon's hair. I'll WAG MS-67.

Bwahahaha!! That ain't his chin...it's part of a silk scarf that would have wrapped around his neck.

I dont think so. It sure looks like a double or tripple chin to me.

Im going to post the grade soon so I want to see some more guesses. We are all over the board...and a couple of you are right on.

Ok, here it is. MS63BN. A couple of you agreed with NGC. I personally dont. This thing is vertually flawless and looks much better in hand than in my poor photos. It is a fairly poor strike. Some of the lettering bairly shows up. I was thinking it would have went a least MS65, but oh well. Its the nicest example of this medal I have seen to this date. I could not find any NGC pops on this medal. It might be the only one they have graded.

By the way, the medal has such high relief, they had to put it in a slab that is almost 1 inch think. Looks just like a normal NGC slab but much thicker.

Here is NGC's photo of the slab:
