Trade Dollar, AU53 DMPL ANACS

kazkaz Posts: 9,203 ✭✭✭✭✭
A member of CoinTalk posted this coin. I have never heard of this designation given by any TPG for a circulated coin. PL TD's are quite scarce, although they do exist for this issue. I (and the owner) would appreciate any learned opinions about the coin as well as the grade given by ANACS. Thanks!

That's the only date I've ever seen DMPL - except for the 1873's in TPG proof holders that don't have the requisite die scratch. image

Thanks, Bruce, for that fast reply. How do you feel about giving a DMPL to a circulated coin? And, where is the "requisite die scratch" located on a PL '73, if it can be posted on a family-friendly forum?image

I don't have a problem with calling a circulated DMPL what it is.

Here is one with the scratch from the sea to the bale across Liberty's foot ...if you search the Heritage archives you will see some called Proof that IMO aren't because of the fabric of the coin and the lack of the die scratch:

Cool! I'm surprised it doesn't have a name, like the "skewered skirt" or something.

There are quite a few au53-58 morgans graded pl by ANACS. I can't recall seeing a circulated dmpl before, but they probably exist in morgans if you have a trade dollar. The question has been asked to PCGS before on the Q&A forum, and at that time they said no, there wasn't enough interest and/or not needed at that time (but left it open to possibly reconsider). I also think NGC grades some deserving AUs as prooflike.
Listen. Strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government. Supreme executive power derives from a mandate from the masses, not from some farcical aquatic ceremony.

    Yaz,

I have several PL and DMPL coins in the Trade Dollar series.....

TDN is correct, DMPL coins are most seen on 77-S. I have a nice 78-S PL, a 74-S PL and 77 PL (it is not a Proof). I have seen a 75 PL. I'm always a little suspicious of Philadelphia mint business strikes that get a PL designation......especially 76's...one or two that I've seen are misdesignated Proofs. The 76 is notorious for being confused.

I would love to see PCGS designate non-Morgan business strikes with a PL and DMPL attribution. Write Mr. Willis....I have!!!!! NGC already does this.

I'll argue with TDN on this one (just a little). It is possible that the die scratch on the PR 73's was accumulated over time and that some PR's (maybe the early mintages) don't have the scratch. Also, maybe there were two dies? I have seen several PR's for 73 that did not have a scrtach but were definitely PR's.

The coin looks polished,Although i'm pretty sure it's not. However I don't think the fields have deep enough mirrors for more than a PL designation.I would like to see that one in hand.

Can't say for certain if the coin could have been considered "polished" -
but from a wear of details perspective, that coin looks AU 58 - just faint rub.

I'd expect much more wear for an AU 53 grade.

The PCGS pop report does list one - an 1887-S Morgan dollar in AU55 DMPL.

    I'm looking at a collection now that has PL 73-P, 73-CC, 75-P, 76-P (wire rim and I'm really on the fence about it being a mis-attributed proof), 77-S, and a 78-CC, 78-S.
    It's a very pretty set.

Wow. I'd love to see a PL 78-cc. Come to think of it, I think I have a 78-s somewhere that's PL. Bought in my early, cannon-fodder days, I think I put it away just assuming I'd been duped by a polished coin. I'll have to have a closer look. Very helpful information from all of you about an aspect of the series that isn't discussed very often. The coin's owner is very appreciative and plans to keep the coin in its current holder.

This was taken in a coupon-clipping room at the bank. The coin is mostly white with very decent contrast.

Wow, that is a gorgeous coin, even in a photo made under less-than-optimum conditions. Thanks

Hey, Connor, welcome to the forum! There are images of several great coins in this thread, and I've definitely learned a few things. Thanks for providing the catalyst.
