Lighting Question/Poll

Just curious what most folks think.

Do you prefer lighting to be slightly darker allowing for shadows and a little more character or do you like the coin fully lit up removing the shadows and making some of the details seem dull?

I like the shadows. They seem to show all the contours and details of the coin better, although both you images do a great job with that.

Well, the funny thing about photos is most of them do look like a coin in hand it just depends on the angle you look at it. image

I like the 2 light pic. The colors on the fully lit one seem to fade a bit.

really great pics by the way.

Both look great to me, but I suspect the 3-light shot is more representative of the coin under most ambient light situations.
    When in doubt, don't.

I like the first one better. What type of lights are you usning, and how far away from the coin are they?

Not sure what brand they are but they are 23W CFL's and are about 18" away from the coin.

I like the 3 light image. Been looking for another Ott light to add to my set up.

the 2 light is a little too contrasty for me (may be partly post-processing).

There's something to be said about contrast. I like contrast, BTW. But I'm learning and I've found with some toned Morgans, tha t a one-light solution is better than two, not to mention three! image

I like the lit up picture because the T & E in states shows pretty toning. But in the shadow photo it is just a dark shadow.
