Any Premium for half DMPLs?

If a Morgan is DMPL on one side how would you price it, just MS?

  • There has to be a premium. Larger premium if the obverse is the DMPL side. That is why they should have split grades. I predict they will eventually. Personally I would probably pay PL money for one with the DMPL on the obverse, probably little to nothing extra for the reverse.

Good question. I think it would depend on the grade and date. Fer instance a 82-s Morgan in ms 65 sheets at 120/130 and 3300 in 65 DMPL.
So how would one price this coin which looks to be DMPL obverse and kinda normal reverse?

I'm pretty sure it wouldn't be ms sheet since I paid more than that.

Depends on the date. If it is a date commonly found with deep mirrors like 79-82 S mints I would say very little. If it is one of the dates that just don't come in PL or DMPL will have significant premiums.

If its low grade and common you may get little to nothing extra. Also depends on who wants it as some will pay a lot more than others. Some will even try to BS ya and say its only worth melt.

I have 79-s and 78-S coins like this. One I paid more for and one was normal price. Consider it an eye appeal factor and price it off that.

  • SPlit grades makes sense even beyond this example. I dont know why the industry hasnt gone to split grading long ago.

I like any coin with a DMPL surface. BUt in reality if a coin isnt DMPL, then it wont ever count for a set so even with a split grade it still wont have to much of a premium. Some PL coins have this problem, no matter how nice they are, they are just PL not DMPL.

Very nice looking 82-S BAJJERFAN, I have a couple just like that with that radiant cameo DMPL obv. and completely non PL rev. I think they came like that from very few die pairs are are not that easy to find these days although very desirable IMO. I would love to add a few more like that to my collection.
