Managed to pick up this LM5 from a forum member not too long ago. It's the first new addition to the core collection in quite some time. Figured I'd share...

I cannot really tell from the picture, but does your example have an engraver's die scratch running up to the NW from the leaf and continuing through the left wingtip? This occurs on early die states, and is worn away on later die states of this marriage.
Great coin, my friend
I cant tell you how much I like these coins, lightly circulated like yours, and booming with eye appeal and killer looks!
I'm more familar and comfoartable grading CBH's, but I would venture a guess of 53.
P.S.--can we get a video of you cracking out this one??

I thought that was on early die state coins? Either way, this one doesn't have it. Some loupe study of the reverse pretty clearly shows the coin as a MDS coin.
Personally in this instance I tend to agree with the PCGS grade of AU50. The obverse shows a bit too much to garner anything higher. I try to stay on the conservative side when grading my coins anyway. I'd much rather undergrade it than overgrade it.
Scooby, I don't need an 1831 in my LOC album so I've no immediate plans to crack it. If I ever do, I'll film it for you
Yes, it is on the early die states. I corrected that. I even wrote an article about that engraver's die scratch in the JR Journal a few years ago. It was early morning, and I was tired - that's my story and I'm sticking to it.
Theres a thread here now where alot of people say that a higher grade is what theyd want.
Personally, Ill take all the AUs that look like this any day of the week over a normal, decent looking 62-63.
I cant stop checking this coin out. Great coin!
<< <i>MS coins have their own appeal and their own place. They sure can be stunning, they're just not my thing. I've only had one MS bust half dime and it was damn nice. It wasn't in the collection long though. Sold off (to a forum member) to finance more AU's. I think all grade ranges will have super nice coins and ugly dogs. >>
I agree, I guess my comments come from my level of finance and how that level applies to enjoying collecting.

The fact that the AU's are less expensive (usually) is a fact that my wallet and my wife are very happy with as well.
How are you buddy?
Nice little addition you have there. It is nice to see your enthusiasm in adding to the collection.
I have been spending major time with my bonsai collection and very little time with my coin collection as of late.
I guess when the trees go into winter hibernation the coins will come back out of the bank box...till then....
Good to see you posting again.
