National autograph guest Lynn Swann's rules.

I was reading online with amusement some of the stipulations of what can and cannot be signed or inscribed by the autograph guests at this year's National. Lynn Swann's took the cake.

-Will not sign trading cards or or unlicensed photos.

-Lynn reserves the right to reject any item.

-Will not sign unsinged or single signed jerseys or jersey numbers and will only sign jerseys with 2 or more signatures already on the jersey.

His auto, at a minimum of $199, is also the most expensive auto of all the guests. ($30 more then even Joe Montana's.) Is he just a really stingy signer outside of shows or is there something else I'm missing?

That is interesting. I wonder, has he always had those rules? I guess if someone has his auto on a card it would make it worth more.

I was also wondering do the players get the whole amount $$ or does some of it go to the promoters?

My daughter was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 2 (2003). My son was diagnosed with Type 1 when he was 17 on December 31, 2009. We were stunned that another child of ours had been diagnosed. Please, if you don't have a favorite charity, consider giving to the JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation)

I could be wrong but I think the player charges the promoter a flat fee for his appearance, and then the promoter sets the price per item.

Are there any other players from any sport who refuse to sign trading cards? Seems like a weird thing to refuse to sign.
  • I believe he reserves the right to smack anyone who purchases his autograph in the face also.

Swann has always been a very tough auto - I think Riggins is pretty tough too - or at least used to be hard to get. When I was a kid I did massive mailings to training camps and did pretty well. Swann was one that I did get back and is framed with a nice 8 x 10.

Wow. These fees are just insane. Then again, it is business and you are free to charge whatevern you want
and set the rules too. Free market economy 101.

Swann is probably the toughest signer of all HOFers besides Al Davis. He only has a couple of certified autographs and rarely signs at private signings or shows (he has been appearing more lately...). At a private signing last December (hosted by Sports Card Heroes), he refused to sign GLAs....for some unknown reason. At least at the National he will sign GLA's but not trading cards.

Personally, I think that he is a primadonna but he is free to dictate the rules as he chooses (because people, like myself, will continue to pay for his autograph).

What's more ridiculous... his rules, or the person that pays $199 to obey them?

Unless one is a team or personal fan - that's a ton to pay for his sig IMO.

Not much humility there - guys like Swan should be happy there's a way to make some coin as a retired player.

Still my all-time favorite is Willie Mays.

I dunno about all the above but a few years back while I was vacationing in PR he was there with his family and was
a very gracious person. Maybe it was because I did not hound him for an auto and simply said 'hello lynn'?

I was at a charity event for the Super Bowl wearing an 88 jersey and he wouldn't sign my HOF helmet of jersey. He did pose for a photo and also signed a Super Bowl bowling pin which was cool, but not what I wanted. He was very nice, but just weird. As much as I want him on my HOF helmet, I have him on some other things and can't justify getting him again, especially when I can get at least 6 other HOF autos. CRAZY!

If he runs for public office again, it may be a good opportunity
for folks to get in person sigs.

He is apparently reluctant to decline autos while campaigning,
as there have been quite a few political flyers and brochures signed
by him for sale on EBAY.

He is rumored to still be considering a second try in the 2010 race for
    the Pennsylvania Governor's office.
