Post some of your positive experiences at B&Ms

Let's focus on some positives.

Post a good to great story about a favorite B&M. Here's one of mine.

This happened back in March or April of this year.

I went into one of our local dealers and told him I was trying to find all the Cherrypicker's Guide varieties. He offered to let me go through what seem like about three to five gallons of Winged Liberty Ladies. He offered to sell them to me for melt. That's right no matter what I found I could buy it at melt. I managed to pick out a few minor double dies RPMs, and an Illusive 1942-S Inverted S dime. This was done on two Saturdays. The first one I found a couple minor things, and it was on the second Saturday I found the Inverted S.

Looking through a 20x and 30x for hours on end is not much fun, but if something looked like it had potential I bought it. I would need to take it home and check it in my microscope to verify. Needless to say, I bought a bunch of stuff that wound up being just common silver, but that was okay, because it was a fair price.

When I was done, I told him what I found and what I thought I found and he tallied up the count and priced it accordingly.

I have been a customer of his for many years, and continue to go back.

So, lets hear your positive numismatic dealer, or brick and mortar stories!

  • Due to my current location I have only 3 or 4 coin shops anywhere close. I walk into one of them for the first time. Its packed with tons of boxes all over, looks like they just bought a ton of stuff. Dealer says sorry for the mess we are just trying to sort through alot of new purchases. Dealer asks what I am looking for and starts to rattle of some series. I say " I am looking for some toned morgans" He says the owner is out currently but thinks there may be a few so check back in a week. I come back in a week same mess same guy and he asks again what I am looking for. I tell him I am looking for toned morgans. He says oh we just sold a couple, If you want toned coins just put them in the window for a monthimage I laugh at him and realize he is dead serious. He says I have no idea what I am doing and that collecting toned coins is a waste of time. I laugh again look him right in the face and say " You sir are an idiot" I then turn around and leave. Needless to say I will never go back there image

    Coin shop number 2

Go in the coin store walk to the back. Dealer approches and asks if he can help. I say do you have any toned morgans. He asks if I want them graded or raw. I say I will take a look at everything with color. He pulls out a raw 1883-O grades it a 64 its really a 63. It has a little color more of a target tone with a slight blue hue to it. I ask how much? He states 270.00! At this point its very hard for me not to laugh. I say I will pass but if you get anything graded feel free to give me a call and I hand him a card. Yup you guessed it ive never heard from him image

Its late but I will post coin shop 3 and 4 at a later date

Met a pretty girl in a coin shop. She asked me to escort her to a dance. That was kind of nice. I hope it's not Polka.

I went into Rocky Mountain Coins in Denver, Colorado and purchased a 1928-S Peace Dollar for MS63 money. I submitted the coin to PCGS for grading and it came back an MS60. I returned to the shop and Klaus immediately refunded my purchase price which I promptly spent on something else.

It doesn't get any better than that.

Now this wasn't a new customer scenario as I had purchased many coin from RMC prior to this so we did have a dealer/collector relationship.
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

I used to go to a local store where the old guy was really nice. I'd often sell some junk silver. I rarely had much money to spend. One day I mentioned that I had just obtained some Nick-A-Date. He sold me as many dateless Buffs as he could find (about 20-25) at face.

    I feel really lucky
I have 4 shops within 10 miles of my home and have yet to have a bad experience at any of them. I have been collecting since about the "76-77" area. I remember when Scott Hocevar started out back in 86 and thinking wow another shop in town. Scott runs the Sears shop of our area a lot of everything. and the guys at J&R's always have something new to shoot the bull about and are very knowledgeable and will share information freely . JP's is a small antique shop that has a small coin area. at he gentleman that works there is one of the kindest and most polite gentleman I know in the business. And Cliff at CC's Coins is just a riot, He and I have become good personal friends and I give him a hand with grading once in awhile when he gets overwhelmed with what is coming in. We always have a great time. (Same dry sense of humor).
Like I said I feel really Lucky.

I, too, visit four shops in my area. They are all okay with me, and two of them go out of their way to help me with a variety of things.

Keep those positive stories coming, as I am sure there are many.

I'd say all of my experiences with the local B & M shops have been positive. I've returned coins with no hassle and have gotten many good deals on coins over the years. I've also sold coins to my local dealers (sadly, of the two best, one has retired and one has changed hands and the jury is still out).

I first went to my B&M when I was about 12. I have seen him many times over the years. Now I am 34. He treats me the same today, with the exception of more colorful language, as he did back then. He attended my high school and college graduation parties along with my grandparents funerals as my dad and him have become close over the years. He buys very high and when he is out of town he hears the horror stories of people going other places in town. Not one experience comes to mine, just positive over all the years.

I try to get to the local coin shop when I'm on the road. I was in Green Bay and stopped into what I think was called Allouez Coins or something like that. I had a real nice, informative visit with the owner who encouraged me to get to the ANA Summer Seminar (which I eventually did, in part on his recommendation). I picked up a chop-marked 1789 8 Reale and an 1883-O Choice BU Morgan, beautifully toned. Still have them. It was a great hour.

When my Father died and I opened the SDB filled with old coins, I was in Alaska. (I live in Hawaii.) Stranger in a strange land...

I asked a friend if he knew of a coin shop where the owner would be straight with me. He directed me to a a place on the Parks highway, between Wasilla and Mt. Denali called "Debbies." I took with me one of each type of coin. The older gentleman, manning the store, very patiently explained what each coin was. He explained the proper etiquette for handling them. He told me how to keep them dry if they were going to live in Hawaii. He sold me a Redbook and told me to read and research what I had before I sold anything. He didn't try to buy anything or sell me anything. He said I had a bunch of reading to do first.

He showed me stunningly beautiful coins from their inventory - that he knew I couldn't buy, just because he could see that I "got it," and thought that they were beautiful too.....

I hope he's well and healthy and happy. And, if you're on your way to Mt McKinley, stop and shop at Debbies!
