Chopmark CC Trade Dollar, GUESS THE GRADE (GRADE REVEALED)

BECOKABECOKA Posts: 16,961 ✭✭✭
Go ahead and make your best guess, I'll post the grade and my thoughts after TDN has a chance to give his, i.e. hopefully when this thread is done it will be educational.

Edited with results:

Wow,

No one got it. image

Genuine, Cleaned

Personally I would net it at about a 45 or 50.

Now for my comments: I wanted to post a challenge to show how difficult it really is to grade a coin by the photo's even when the detail is there and the photos are large enough to see most everything. image

45 - or 50 if there's more luster than the pic appears to show

Getting closer and the hint is there is no more luster than the image shows. image

    OK, last hint,

What do you usually get when you have this much detail and no luster?

I like it and 53 seems reasonable

I would guess 53 or 55, depending what it looks like in hand. Great pics, by the way.

(OK, if pressed, I'll say 55.)
  • AU55 I love that teal color - great pics, Ben!

Have bought and sold on BST, many references available when asked.

I'm afraid you just didn't set the bar low enough with the hints, LOL! Still a nice looking coin, and shows how hard it can be to spot a cleaning from photos.

I guess another thing I forgot to mention is if someone is on a budget you can get pretty good looking coins with great strikes in genuine holders for much less than beat up lower graded "problem free" versions. image

Excellent point! I think the Genuine service from PCGS is a good thing.

I know it's not the way "it" works, but come on. Not grading a chopmarked trade dollar because it was cleaned?
It's had a steel punch taken to it!

I'd call it an AU53 chopmarked and that's being conservative.

That coin easily makes it into a slabbed XF45 holder before the "Genuine" option was invented. image

I have seen a lot worse coins graded.Crack it out and resubmit it,unless the cleaning is very obvious with the coin in hand.I say its AU-50+.

This belongs to a photography client, he is seriously considering it.

Hmm, I guessed @ AU53 before reading the posts. Some coins you can tell have been cleaned from images. This one you cannot.
