? about "The First Class"

Of the first five players to be inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1936 (Cobb, Ruth, Wagner, Mathewson and the Big Train), is there any one vintage set that features all of them? My understanding is that the only real playing overlap was from 1914 to 1916.

    Edited to add
    Paging Mr. Herman
  • Yeah, Bill, I think that would be considered vintage. What about a niche set from 1914 -16? By the way, Vito, let me know when Mr. Ward returns your call.

Edited to add: I love that stupid movie....lol. Shhhhhhhhh, I'm listening to reason.

Great flick. Tim Burton directing a Phil Hartman script. What could be better? But seriously, FKW has insane knowledge about pre-war regional and oddball sets etc.
  • I dont think there is a set with all of them......

The 1914 Piedmont Stamps set has all except Ruth

The 1915 Sporting News M-101-5 has all except Mathewson

The more I keep thinking about this, I think only late 1914 thru 1916 did all their careers actually intersect. Mathewson was hit with shrapnel fighting in WWI and never pitched after 1916 and Ruth wasn't brought up to Boston until late 1914. So that surely would limit the possibilities.

    Wagner played: 1897-1917
    Ruth: 1914-1935
    Mathewson: 1900-1916
    Cobb: 1905-1928
    W. Johnson: 1907-1927
  • Mathewson did not take shrapnel , he inhaled poisonous gasses from a training excerise and ended coming back to the states with a
terrible wheezing cough....Cobb was there with him in the excercises

It seems that there are no sets with all five of them........4 out of the 5 is all i can find .

You're right. Sorry, got my you know what mixed up. image
  • That ok , facts to get mixed up all the time.......Heres another

Why is Johnny Bench considered the greatest catcher of all time ?

Has anyone ever looked very closely to the stats of one Lawrence Peter Berra( the best of all time)

    3 mvp awards
    caught 3 no-hitters
    better batting avg.
    more rbi's with fewer at-bats
    more total runs scored

    sorry for the rant.....image

Offensively, they are on equal footing...the most telling stats to compare the two...OB%, OPS, and adjusted OPS+ are very close:

    OBP%

    Bench .342
    Berra 348

    SLG%

    Bench .476
    Berra .482

    OPS

    Bench .817
    Berra .830

    OPS+

    Bench 126
    Berra 125

    HR

    Bench 389
    Berra 358

Defensively, though, I have to give the edge to Bench..

  • RE: Bench, a better defensive catcher and he pioneered the one handed catching style. Better arm than Berra, better athlete.
  • Who says you need to be an athlete to play baseball , Just ask Manny , he cant even catch a baseball , but damn can he hit...image

Sure, Manny can hit, but no one is comparing him to Willie Mays, either, LOL...

Edit: Bench was also just as good a hitter as Berra, also....

  • Berra became a pretty good defensive catcher . He called his own game and pitchers never shook him off . Plus
his overall contribution to his team.

I agree Berra was a great catcher, no question about it, just that Bench was better overall, and the numbers show that..

  • Yes , and he was better then Manny out there too , but not by much...image

Good thing he had Joe D. out there . It wasnt always pretty watching him run down balls with those short legs..image

Oh, and the other stat that doesn't show up....

Yogi - super nice guy, signs autographs, great sense of humor, a class act all the way.

    Bench - not so much
