who do I feel worse for.... the dealer or the buyer????
![joebb21](https://us.v-cdn.net/6027503/uploads/authoricons/fonzie.jpg)
so I was in NY city earlier today and I saw a sign on a jewlery store advertising that they buy jewlery, bullion, and antique coins.
So... Figuring if they do buy antique coins they might have some for sale so I walked in.
I had with me a $20 Double eagle pieces (1927 pcgs MS66) (I had aquired it in a trade earlier in the day-which was why I was in the city to begin with)
After looking around and not seeing any coins I approached the counter and asked the man what he could pay for my $20 ms66 piece.
His first question was "is that a 1930 or 1933?"
I look at him wondering if hes just joking and say no its a common 1927 (in ms66).
He reponds that he could give me $950 for the coin (saying he would pay the fair value of an "ounce of gold").
Now either he thought I was unaware of it's value and was just trying to take me or something else that I just dont know.
I ask him why his first question was is this a 1930 or 1933 (knowing myself that there were no 1930's minted and the 1933's are quite rare)(go langboard!!!)
he replies that Every week has a guy come in there selling him some 1930 and 1933 double eagles, and he buys them for "Spot price"
Now Im lost with what to say. I know that there were no 1930 double eagles even minted, and the 1933's are... well...you know!!!
well here was the kicker-
I asked him to see the coins hes been buying, and he replies that and EVERY FRIDAY AFTERNOON (only an hour before I got there) a "BIG TIME DEALER" comes into his store and buyes these exact coins for a handsome profit to himself.
He said he is usually able to sell the 1933's for $5,000 (to this "BIG DEALER") AND the 1930's for $4,000 each.
well- I tell him that the 1933's are quite rare and that there were no 1930's minted, but he says that what I am telling him is impossible as "he clearly has been selling these to his "big dealer" for months already now!!!
So....
who should I feel sorry for?
The dealer that has been buying FAKE GOLD COINS NOW FOR MONTHS?
or the "big dealer" who has been BUYING THE FAKE COINS FOR THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS!!!!

Fellas, leave the tight pants to the ladies. If I can count the coins in your pockets you better use them to call a tailor. Stay thirsty my friends......
<< <i>I feel sorry for you for taking the red pill instead of the blue pill.
Since that movie came out, the question of "Why or Why didn't I take that Little Blue Pill?" has new meaning!
BTW, for the OP, don't feel sorry for either of them but if you feel you must, feel sorry for that dealer for giving you such a cock and bull story!
The name is LEE!
I would have hugged him and told him that God truly loved him and walked out.
It's almost sad. Two people taken for large amounts, due in part to lack of knowledge.
Buy the book before you buy the coin, even a red book will do.
