did anyone see the umpire take the rosin bag in buehrle perfect game

did anyone else see the umpire rush in and grab the rosin bag in buehrle perfect game, just curious. it should be for sale upon the umpires retirement.

Comments

  • He stole it? Wouldn't it be property of the team? Unless he was grabbing it to 'secure it' for the team/player.

I am not sure about baseball, but in the NHL linesmen are allowed to take certain pucks. Obviously if a player breaks a record or something, he (the player) gets to keep the puck.

Maybe the bag belongs to the league, or maybe the umpire took it to give it to the player...

Umpires are the ones that provide the rosin bags......

"Under the supervision and control of the umpire, the pitcher may use to dry his hands a small, finely meshed sealed bag containing powdered rosin, furnished by the League."

The current rule states the following:

"All umpires shall carry with them one official rosin bag. The umpire-in-chief is responsible for placing the rosin bag on the ground back of the pitcher's plate. If at any time the ball hits the rosin bag it is in play. In the case of rain or a wet field, the umpire may instruct the pitcher to carry the rosin bag in his hip pocket. A pitcher may use the rosin bag for the purpose of applying rosin to his bare hand or hands. Neither the pitcher nor any other player shall dust the ball with the rosin bag; neither shall the pitcher nor any other player be permitted to apply rosin from the bag to his glove or dust any part of his uniform with the rosin bag."

I remember watching Nolan Ryan's 7th no-hitter, and right afterwards, when Ryan is being mobbed by his teammates, the 3rd base coach runs into the mix and steals Ryan's cup. No lie.
