Mark Buehrle Perfect Game Rookie Card

After Buehrle finished his perfect game today I decided to buy a 2000 Bowman Chrome PSA 10
Buehrle rookie card for $40.00 An ebayer had 3 Bowman Chrome PSA 10s and all 3 sold out
within a half-hour. Do you think I made a wise purchase? Is Buehrle on his way to a hall
of fame baseball career. Ironically he has given up more hits than innings pitched but he
has 133 wins is only 30 and is left-handed. Maybe he has another 10 years in him.

not many pitchers have a no hitter and a perfect game in their back pockets
  • Weren't you the same one wondering whether the dozens of vintage looking baseball cards you purchased for real cheap were reprints or not?

I think it's safe to say that this isn't a card that will appreciate in value.

133 wins at age 30 , on an anemic White Sox team is far from hall of fame worthy.

I think it is certainly better to be the owner who is selling rather than the buyer who is purchasing in this case.

What would be better was to have raised the price to 80.00 and be the seller.

    Good for you.
  • Mike Mussina had 136 wins as a 30 year old on a mediocre Baltimore Orioles team. I think
most would believe that he will eventually be elected into the Hall of Fame. So I think
Buehrle has a chance. Yes the seller surprisingly did not jack up the prices of the cards
because I looked right after the game was over. He kept it at 40 dollars with free shipping.

two different pitchers. Mussina had very low ratios. Higher Strikeouts and then the benefit of playing on several world champion teams.
  • Buherlie's WP% is childs play compared to Mussina's until age 30. Mussina had a better ERA by atleast 0.5 runs per game, and Mussina also got out of Baltimore at 31 and onto a potent Yankees team.

    You're comparing apples and oranges.

What teams would that be? I don't recall Mussina being on any championship teams.

You paid the "peak-hype" price for that card, which is WAY too much.

PSA 10s were selling for less than $10 all year long on thePit.com prior to the last out of the game today. It's still avaliable for less than $20 on that site.

That tells me that the seller did raise his price before the game ended.

The time to buy that card was yesterday.

I did a quick look at the end of the 8th inning. There were 3 sellers with this card listed with BINs of $19.99 or less.

Moose was on a team that SHOULD have won quite a few championships but won zero.

Let me put this in perspective for you...

A 1965 Steve Carlton Topps Rookie in PSA 7 goes for about $100. Buehrle will never match Carlton's stats or accomplishments so it is safe to say his Rookie card will have little long term value. 10 years from now you would have overpaid greatly for that card.

Mussina is a borderline HOFer leaning on the wrong side of the fence. I actually think it's not a great comparison since Mussina threw a lot harder earlier in his career. A much better comparison would be Greg Maddux in his first 9 years, although clearly not at the same level. Beuhrle has great command and can be dominating at times (obviously), but he's going to need to get his ERA a lot lower to start getting consideration. The one thing about command pitchers is that they get better in their mid-30s because they didn't have a whole lot of speed to lose, they've learned all the players and umps in the league and their location continues to improve. Maddux didn't hit his stride until his 7th year, so if this is truly Beuhrle's breakout year and he conintues to dominate, he definitely has a shot. Say Beuhrle finishes this year at 18-5 with a 3.15 ERA. SHould garner some CYA consideration with his perfect game, and if he continues to get better, who knows? But yeah, he's got a lot of work to do.
