Continuing the trend - who is the greatest ACTIVE baseball player?

I would have to go with Albert Pujols. Any argument there? He certainly has more rookie cards than any player in the history of baseball cards I do believe.

I'm really not sure that anyone else fits the bill. The man is a GREAT fielder, hits for average and power, and although he isn't extremely fast he is an excellent base runner and can swipe bases at a decent clip. The dude is just an all around phenomenal player. I just hope he stays clean.

Pujols, though I question whether he's clean. I question whether any of them are clean, great or average. Except Omar Vizquel.

    Best Batter = Pujols

    Best Pitcher = Halladay

A lot of people love Halladay, but I don't see much upside to him. In fact, I think this could be the last "good" season.

Here we go again with these questions. Define "ACTIVE"? You mean, who is playing at the greatest level now? Or which player, still playing, is the greatest? The former is Pujols, the latter, could be Griffey Jr., could be AROD, could be any number of people, because Pujols could get hit by a bus tomorrow and he wouldn't have the career stats of 20 ACTIVE players. And don't get me started on pitchers, because I'll take Randy Johnson now over a possible Roy Halladay in 10 years, even Trevor Hoffman would apply as all-time saves leader.

    Kiss me twice.....let's party.

Manny can hit but he's a cancer. Pujols goes all out every play. I've never seen such a lazy, pathetic fielder as Manny. I wouldn't even put Manny in the top 5 of best active, all-around players.

He displayed pretty much the exact opposite of those characteristics in the All-Star Game, though. GREAT players step up in the spotlight. They don't crumble.

So he's not great because he had one bad game? And that game was an All-Star Game? Which is basically a glorified exhibition game? Hell, we might as well judge everyone based on their first game of spring training. I mean if they're great they should go 5-5 the first game of spring, because apparently great players never have a bad game.

I didn't say that. I just pointed out that when the spotlight shown brightly on him, he booted a ball which led to 2 runs and went 0-3 at the plate. Heck, they bent the rules to get him into the second round at the home run derby.

ESPN was tripping all over themselves (as some with a similar man crush here do) to make him look like an epic superhero that was the next savior of baseball, but in the end he didn't look as infallible as ESPN (and, again, others with a similar man crush here) make him out to be.

Is he a great player? Sure. Is he the greatest? That's debatable.

Is he 29? Maybe a few years ago! image
  • if pujols were not 29 , what would that mean? does that diminish his stats? im confused abot the pujols age thing....

Diminish his stats? Well, no. His stats are his stats; they're etched in stone.

But if Pujols were not 29 years of age, it would mean that he has been lying about his age; which would call into question anything else he has said of a substantive nature. For example, Pujols stating that he has never used PEDs.

Also, according to ESPN, Pujols is signed through the 2010 season and the Cardinals have a club option for 2011. When it comes time for Pujols to sign his next contract, would it matter if Pujols were 30 years old (as he would be at the end of the 2010 season) or if he were, in fact, 31, 32 or perhaps older?

Does it matter if we know they cheated? Manny has cheated but he can hit that ball!
