Lou Gehrig's Record Of 23 Career Grand Slams

JackWESQJackWESQ Posts: 2,133 ✭✭✭
It's not mentioned as one of the "unbreakable records", but I've always thought that Lou Gehrig's record of 23 career grand slams would be tough to beat. Well, after tonight Manny Ramirez has 21 career grand slams and I think it's safe to say that Manny will be around for a few more seasons.

Here's the list of all-time leaders:

1. Lou Gehrig - 23
2. Manny Ramírez - 21
3. Eddie Murray - 19
4. Willie McCovey - 18
5. Robin Ventura - 18
6. Jimmie Foxx - 17
7. Alex Rodriguez - 17
8. Ted Williams - 17
9. Hank Aaron - 16
10. Ken Griffey, Jr. - 16
11. Dave Kingman - 16
12. Babe Ruth - 16

ROBIN VENTURA?! And he hit 294 career home runs and had 1182 career RBIs. I would have guessed much less.

With reguards to Ventura hitting those 18 grand slams. I would like to see how many times Thomas was on
base IBB also Thomes went throught times were it looked like he would rather walk the base loaded then get
    a hit with two on.

Thomas was on base in 8 of Ventura's GS's, but none of them were due to IBB. Thomas was on via a walk for 4 of those though.

Wow, I didn't know this, but:

On 2 occasions, Ventura hit 2 grand slams on the same day!

    9/4/95: Ventura hit grand-slams in back-to-back innings!
5/20/99: Ventura hit a grand slam in both games of a doubleheader.

In 1968 Jim Northrup (Detroit Tigers outfielder) hit
2 Grand Slams on consecutive times at bat.

The only other person to do that was Jim Gentile.

A-Rod is more then likely to eclipse Lou Gehrig and Manny at some point.

Didn't Fernando Tatis hit two Grand Slams in the same inning?

It sounds ridiculous, but I think I remember that????

But Gehrig is the only one of the 3 who won't have a * next to his name...

Going into tonight, Josh Willingham needed 21 more grand slams to tie Lou Gehrig's record. But after hitting two (2) grand slams tonight, he now only needs 19 more.

P.S. Willingham's slams were in back-to-back innings. Nice.

Ventura actually would have had 19 Grand Slams. If you remember in the 1999 National Leauge Championship series, he hit a walk off, grand slam credited to him as a single.

    Check the video link

Also, Tatis had a pinch hit grand slam tonight

I'd wager Ted Williams might have topped that list if not missing 5 years worth of playing time.

...and Ventura was a pretty darn good player image

    Kaline Fan:

If I remember correctly, I think Northrup hit a grand slam that capped a 10 run inning in the World Series against St. Louis.

Experience the World through Numismatics...it's more than you can imagine.
