  • I have an OTT folding lamp that works pretty well on slabbed coins without a bunch of glare, but for any other shot I prefer a vision enhance spiral bulb that I got from Wal-Mart for $30. It is only sold in the lamp section, and comes with an actual desk lamp. That bulb works great for me. Those are the only 2 full spectrum lights I am familiar with, so I can't say that they are better than any other. They work well for me though.

He's referring to a digital microscope, the Dino-Lite. As in the other thread you made, levans, you should consider a qx5 along with the Dino-Lite series.

  • I have a dino-lite, I forget the model #, 411 I think. it has 6 LEDs, and a "shut off" in the software. I'm not sure if lower models can be shut off or not. That is the LEDs can be shut off.

You will find you need an alt light source. and glare is a problem, especially with the LEDs on.

Also if you buy a model that comes with a stand, you may find it hard to take a full slab pic. you need extra hight to get the full slab. Putting the stand on a thick book will work.

This pic was taken with the LEDs on. I set the coin at a slight angle to deflect the glare.

They can be fun to play with, and take better pics than many ebay sellers.

311 or higher works for me.

The only pics I can show you right now are HERE.

    Hope this helps!

If I were buying one, I would get the long working distance one with a stand.

    ........this may help some, levans498

    .......how to choose
"government is not reason, it is not eloquence-it is a force! like fire, it is a dangerous servant and a fearful master; never for a moment should it be left to irresponsible action." George Washington

  • Most of the lower priced ones can not readily focus on a whole coin with magnification. The Long focal
distance setup is needed ( extended). It is more expensive because of the lens design. A polarization
feature is nice if you need to photograph a lot through plastic slabs to remove the glare. The problem
is when you get to these advanced setups, the price is near that of a stereo binocular scope that you
can photograph through an eyepiece, and it has much better optics and resolution.

The software that is usually sent with these in the past was a POS. Most software packages such as
Corel X2 allows direct import from the usb port and does much much better.
