Newp for my daughter, 1844 N/M $5

My daughter saved up $350 to get a new gold coin. She has no direction in gold so she had nothing in mind. There where several coins she was going to buy but the deals never went through because the coins had already been sold. On her last coin club meeting with me (had to take her back to MO), I let her keep any money she made by selling some of my coins. This amounted to $100 and I let her put it towards a gold coin for her. I then upped my price on the BST board and Broadstruck offered me an 1844 for a fair price. After thinking about and seeing pictures I said lets do it. The transaction was perfect and I know I'll be buying from him again in the future.

She now has an 1882-S and an 1844 N/M Liberty $5 gold. She now has the oldest gold coin between us. She acquired the 1882-S in Oct in her first show she went to, and she just got the 1844 but hasn't been able to see it in person yet. That will have to wait till Nov when I get her again.

Here are her two Half Eagles. Excuse my pictures, I'm still trying to get used to imaging gold, and you can see every minute little blemish in these photos. The coins in hand are both very strong for the grade, especially the 1844.

Did your daughter help with the decision??

Yes, she helped out with picking it out, but every gold coin I showed her she was saying yes to. image

She has only seen the photos that Broadstruck sent and she was very happy with the coin. Wait, let me rephrase that. She seen the photos, then squealed like a little girl, jumped up and down a bit and said "I want, I want, I want". After she found out she got it, she threw her arms around me and said "Thank you Daddy".

  • Sir,
One of the best threads Ive read here lately...

I can only hope any of my kids pick this hobby up. My oldest was showing interest, but now lives in Florida with her mother. image When I do get to see her I try to really have fun with her and coins, so far she seems to like them. Shes only 6.

Great coins too, esp the 1844 NM.

Mine is 7 and has been collecting since about age 5. Here is her with her Franklin book she is putting together. Most of them are from my Junk Franklins but she is happy with them and that's what counts. She wants to finish it, but is also putting together a proof Franklin set. Right now she has the '57, '59, '61, '62 and '63 proofs.

Very cool Moonbiter! If you bought me gold, I'd probably squeal like a little girl and throw my arms around you and say: "I love you Daddy" too. But then that would be pretty weird dude!

Congrats on your budding YN and your dedication to the hobby!

    Cheers!

She has purchased 2 Half Eagles and 2 1/10th oz gold coins so far with her own money. I've just given her about $150 for her coins. When her Great Grandmother gave her $100 she said she wanted to buy a gold coin, and bought an Australian 1/10th oz year of the Dragon Gold coin.
  • Wow, that '44 is gorgeous!
  • That is awesome that she is into coins at her age. I love Franklins too. I will send pm.

I think she is into Franklins because it's the first coin she can answer questions about. She knows more about that series then any other series, she still has lots to learn and her knowledge is very limited but she's good for a 7 year old. Until this summer she has had no direction on what to collect and just bought what she liked, which is fine. This summer when she seen proof Franklins, she got focused and wants to get a business strike and proof set. There are some expensive proofs, but I'm sure she'll finish it off someday.

Nice looking coins, both of them. My daughter is the same age but has not been bitten by the coin bug.
