Threats and curses for QuattroCoins

MarkMark Posts: 3,542 ✭✭✭✭✭
QuattroCoins (Ken)

OK, I just read on that other, nice thread your nasty note in which you pointed out that you passed me. And, I just checked and see that you are right. So, rather than clutter the "nice" thread, I thought I'd create a separate thread in which I will will hurl threats and invoke curses! (As well as make pleas and whimpers....) OK, now for the threat: I'll get you!!!! Pretty cool threat, eh? Now for the curse: Darn you!!! Pretty elaborate curse, eh? If anyone else wants to similarly threaten and curse Quattro, feel free to do so--that's what this thread is for!

More seriously, VERY nice additions! My goodness, 3 MS67FB's!! I have a secondary goal of obtaining MS67's for most of the dimes in the 40's and some in the 30's--do you have a similar objective?

I might--and I stress the word might--have a chance at temporarily over-taking you because I tentatively plan on going to the ANA show in Jacksonville later this week. Unfortunately, the dealer from whom I buy most of my dimes apparently won't have a table at this show, so I don't know if I'll find a dime or not. But, rest assured, that I can overtake you, I won't hesitate a moment. But I know I don't have the $$$ to add 3 MS67FB's, so anything I can do won't be nearly as neat as what you have done!

Mark

P.S.: I thought you and I had another registry set in common, but I just went looking and couldn't find it. Do we have another set in which you can send (or, more likely, already have sent) me south?
Mark

I must say that I knew who the author was imediately! imageimage LOL
Sorry Mark, that you had to be in front when I finally took my first step up. My set has been dropping since it first registered at #9, and I thought I was over-due for at least one step forward! image
We do have a similar objective in as much as I would like to get as many 67FBs as I can! (of course, a 68FB at the right time and price...) image LOL
I will be upgrading my '16 as soon as the 67FB arrives from Heritage. I should be getting a '44D and a '44S soon, also. image
Now, if I can only find the other "bookends" image

Good luck at the show. At least I give you someone to aim at! image

    Don,

Thanks for the encouragement. With a couple of shows (FUN and Baltimore) there should be some new entries for some of the Merc Registry Set. I am looking forward to all the new entires.

BTW, I see a lot of red again! Go for it!

11 Sets with Upgrades or Additions on a Tuesday?? Whats going to happen on the Regular Friday Upgrade Day ??
Don: When that 16P gets to you just send it My Way. Sure looked like a Nice Coin to Me. I'm still waiting for a coin from them also. They seem a little slow to me. Is this true or am I lacking patience?
Anyway Guys/Gals there is some real nice stuff going on in Our Registry. Really getting a Kick out of the Effort Everyone is putting into thier Personal Sets.imageimageimage

        1. Hey Ken,

Are you sayin' that money's no object?!? Just send $950.00, and it will be on it's way! image LOL

It is very true that they are laxed in their shipping dept. This is not the first time I've waited two weeks for a coin from them. For those interested, here's another look. As you can see, the auction closed on 2/21 and I paid with a c.c.
I just hope that it (and the '44D&S) arrives before Friday! image

          Don,

Nice '16-P. Wouldn't we all like to have one that looked as good, maybe with a tiny "D" on the reverse.image The 3 MS67FB's are equally impressive. I'd be happy to have just one of those, if only to see if a 67 is noticeably better than a 66. Keep up the good work.

I want to add my congratulations to Quattrocoins for his persistence and achievements.

Now, I can fess up. I decided to bail out of the proof washington competition because I knew he was coming up fast in that category as well, and I didnt want to face the humiliation someday of having him beat me out of my top spot.

So I took the coward's way out and sold my set.

          go get em champ.

and to the rest of you-- beware -- he shows no mercy to the competition.

I feel your pain on waiting for Heritage. I thought that it would be quicker to go to their offices (down the street) and get my Long Beach auction winnings. They still made me wait a week and a half before they would let me come and get the material. I think that they only know one speed - slow.

It's my understanding that the lots from both the Heritage Signature sale and Heritage Bullet sale were in CA and that they had to wait a few days to have them all shipped back, accounted for, etc...I just received the lot that I won in the sale and it came a few days after it typically would.

                  Tom,

You are right. They got the lots back in Texas on Tuesday and begged me to not come in until Friday. When I called Friday so they could pull my stuff, they asked me to delay until Monday (even though the lots were then past due). Lately, it seems that they have had a lot of problems in processing the material post auction. Guess that means that the percentage of bidders winning who are not present has increased.

The pictures of my Merc's were just added Monday. It seems I stumbled upon the right combination of settings to get good close-up shots with my camera. Now I'll have to re-do the hundreds of pictures I already have. Glad you liked them

                  Ken:

Nice pictures of your dimes. I had 3 favorites: Your 38-P and 43-S, which both appear to be in old-style PCGS holders (?). I have a preference for very white coins and these seemed pretty and very conservatively graded. However, my favorite was the 19-P. I liked the toning around the rim. I see this sort of toning as functioning almost as a frame. If I collected solely what I like, I might well go in that direction. However, given that my wife is along for the ride (thank goodness!) and she likes blast white, that's what I pursue. But your 19-P is truly pretty!

                  Quattro:

First off, sorry about the screw-up on the name--that's why I think the other thread asking who we are is invaluable.

Your proof Washington quarter set is impressive! I think it will take me a little time--like about forever--before I am breathing down your neck in that arena. However, I do STRONGLY urge you to spend you coin money up-grading that set and forget about these measly little Mercury dimes. I bet there are a lot of people reading this thread that strongly agree! But it's interesting to know that many of us (certainly me) have Alan to "blame" for shoving us downward... I wonder what Alan is collecting with his money from selling his quarters....

Just to boost your ego a bit, check out the Barber quarters in a day or so. Right now you are ahead of one other collector, but wait a day or so...

                  Mark

P.S.: Did you ever think a thread with a title directing threats and curses to you would merit about 20 replies???

Mark, Don and my other friends. I've told a few people "off the record" but in the interest of post-Enron open disclosure to all, I will now publicly announce my new effort:

                  Mint State Roosevelts.

Some long-time message board participants will recall a thread several months ago in which we discussed what the next "hot" series would be. I suggested the MS Roosies because of the likelihood that the Roosevelt dime was due for a change and might even be a Reagan dime. I'm following my instincts.

Im picking up MS67's when I can (at a good price) and saving my "gun powder" for any MS68's that might come on the market.

One of the top registry set owners happens to live just a few blocks from my home and we go to the same neighborhood coin store for the weekly Tuesday night bid-board -- so I will have someone to compare notes with along the way.

But right now, the collection is small -- but that is the path I'm taking.

Don... this is a path you need not take.

                  cheers, alan mendelson
                9. Well, I added four more, but didn't advance my position! image

The MS67FB '16P finally showed up from Heritage, and it was worth the wait. The clouds of color are just Gorgeous! image
This was one coin that I never expected to win the bid. image
To get such a gorgeous coin for the "unseen" price was a great score! image

Don: Got My 18S from Heritage also. The Scan that they had did not do the Coin Justice. Seems to Me that a outfit as large as they are could do a little better job of Showing the product. Nice Additions to your Set. Its a real Bummer to put that many 67's into your set and not advance.image
Everyone must be broke because the Additions and Up-Grades this week were way down from previous weeks. Surely that will change Knowing this Group.image

                      Quattro:

Shouldn't adding 4 more coins advance you to probably 9th place? (Or, are you counting the 3 67FB's you already added (!) as part of the 4?) I calculate that you should advance to 9th place as soon as you add coins whose grades total to more than 155.54 points. The (nice!) 16-P already adds 69 points, so you need to get only 86.54 more points. Or, have I erred in my math?

Re the Barber quarters: Now you rule over 2 other sets, rather than only 1. I, personally, think you should devote your time, efforts, and $$$ to this set and forget all about these ugly Mercs.

I got a flyer from David Hall yesterday. He's predicting great things for silver Roosevelts and is selling an MS66 set of Roosevelts for $1,450. He has 28 sets in stock and says that only 161 MS66 sets can be assembled.

Mark: yes, I saw that flyer. In fact the whole flyer points out his "forecasts" for certain series (mostly modern) and claims that the registry competition will be sending interest and prices soaring. For those of you who didnt get the David Hall newsletter it says that the registry is the latest great milestone for collecting, and he indicates that other milestones included the birth of teletrade, the publication of coin world, etc.

Im using his price for the ms66 set as a benchmark, but Im interested in a ms67+ set with one or two ms68's thrown in, just so I can get into the top five.

my strategy is this: get a couple of ms68s FIRST. I feel the 67's will always be available... unless Quattro scoops them up first. LOL.

                      cheers, alan
                    5. That's convenient that David Hall has sets of MS66 Roosies sitting around and one of his top set recommendations is the same. A set of white MS66 Roosies sounds incredibly boring to me.

I know you are after higher grades. My best bet is that if David Hall could gather 28 sets of Roosevelts graded MS67, he'd promote the heck out of that set. As it stands, I think these MS66 sets will all be very nice and will all be looking up at your set!

                      Ken,
You're right... their scans don't do the coins justice. They look dull compared to the lustrous coin, itself.

                      Mark,
My bad! image I should have said six of the seven new arrivals were upgrades. The '41D was the only true addition. Upgrades don't help your position as much as additions.

                      Alan,
Looked them over, and didn't find any 68s (least that I can tell! image). image
Might come up with a 67 or two, though.
I did collect them with "full bands" in mind! image
You won't have to worry 'bout me sniping any on you. I just got laid-off, so my coin $ has dried up. image
                      Which raises my next question:

Anyone interested in the coins that were just upgraded? They were sent in (raw) together about 2 years ago(they all have close cert. #s), and were all VERY conservatively graded. They are:
1916P MS65FB...light russet toning; very clean, hit-wise; was in a NGC MS66FB holder.
                      1934P MS64FB, 1940D MS65FB, 1942D MS64FB, 1944D MS66FB, & 1944S MS66FB (all of them white).
PM me if interested in any.
                      Don't worry, Mark, got a 1916P MS67FB to pay-off! imageimage

                      Regards,
