Will classic commemoratives be "What's hot" following Heritage's sale of Bassano Commemora

at their pre-ANA sale? It looks like a very nice collection (here) but it's not at all my area. image

I really don't think so. Actually, I wouldn't be surprised to quite a few of these coins to realize a lot less then the purchase price considering when they were bought. I have my eye on a couple coins but I won't chase them to the moon. There are a couple big players back in the toned commem game so it will be interesting to see how this plays out.....JMO. MJ

I thumbed through that catalog and then threw it straight into the trash.

The really nice Commem's, such as these, usually do quite well. Just too many slugs sitting in cases for this series to see a steady rise. I've got a few on my watch list and asked Heritage to send me the catalog. Got it yesterday as a matter of fact. Since I'm working on a book around this series I feel it's important to have as much information as possible. Knowledge is king. image

There are some really nice high grade coins there, and they will probaby get decent prices. As far as affecting the rest of the early commem market I doubt it. Early commems are the only area I currently collect in US coins, and it's been a undervalued market for the past 30 years, I don't see that changing any time soon.

If anyone else is going to dispose of their copy in the same manner I would be more than happy to take it off of your hands and reimburse postage! I am not a big enough player at all to get on Heritages mailing list so I miss out on these....and I collect classic commems so it would be nice to have one!!!

  • No.

I bet its another 5-10 years at least until wide spread interest. If ever at all.

I personally would collect the classics, but the prices for some are just stupid in high grades.

Some beautiful coins, but most will go for too much for me.

That Lafayette is a BEAST (that's bigger and badder than a MOOSE).

  • Some nice coins yeah but I dont think the increased prices on high grade commems are worth it. From what I have seen many higher grades are no better than 64's or 65's. I will stick to those grades. Thanks for posting this though.
  • Are commemoratives "What's hot?"

I was blown away with some of the prices realized in this collection. I was an underbidder on a few of these and I ended up not being on the same planet. The following surprised me the most for what they were in this envirnoment-

    Lafayette 67----77k
    Alabama 2x2 67----23k
    Arkansas 38-P 67-----15k
    Bay Bridge 68-----18k
    California 68------17k
    Hudson 67------17k
    Missouri 2x4 66----20k
    Monroe 67-------30k
    Oregon 36-P 68------27k
    Oregon 38-d 68----12k
    Oregon 39-p 68---18k
    Sesqui- 66---------43k
    Texas 36-p 68---------11k
    Wisconsin 68------------8k

I guess never underestimate Hertitage's marketing and putting all the big players in one room together. It doesn't hurt that a couple key players are back in the game putting sets together. High end commems are alive and well. What until some of the real monstors come out.........MJ

Collector grade Classic Commemoratives are dead in the water, hoping to not drown.
I collect Capped Bust series by variety in PCGS AU/MS grades.

Those Oregons are still a long ways away from previous highs of $30-$60K.
