New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.
When asked who should write the forward for my Whitman book, the decision to let Tom write it was easy.
Tom has been a great leader for the hobby. He was a talented writer for Coin World assuming the editor for the Collector's Clearinghouse column. Did he invent that long-running column? I bet he did.
Then he was tapped to run the American Numismatic Association Certification Service and was instrumental in getting it to be the first grading service.
When the long lost Dupont 1804 walked in the doors at the ANA for authentication, Tom was the one to realize it was real and more importantly, stolen.
After moving back to Chicago, Tom began working for Harlan Berk, and still does today.
There have been numerous times when his valued opinion on a variety, or proported fake was all that was required to sway an opinion.
Even the smallest value item had some interest to him. Tom collected Honduras coinage because they were so variety-prone.
Anyway, again, congratulations Tom, you are a first rate numismatist and gentleman!
I am writing from memory, so there are undoubtedly omissions here, but suffice to say, the ANA made a stellar choice this year.
Thank you, all. I was deeply touched when the ANA called to give me the news. I am likewise touched by your congratulations. Tom
