Has Anyone Been to the Fremont Coin Show in Northern California?

ThePennyLadyThePennyLady Posts: 4,481 ✭✭✭✭✭
I will be setting up at the Fremont Coin show in Northern California for the first time this weekend (July 25-26). I understand it's a small show, about 45 tables. Has anyone attended or set up at this show before, and if so, what did you think?

I've been there, and yes it is small, but still a fun show to attend. Now that I know you're going, I might have to swing by and say hello....image

I used to set up at this show but no longer do. The show is worth attending for anybody from the area and many dealers often report healthy amounts of retail sales, but that depends on the individual dealers themselves. Because the ANA is in Los Angeles two weeks after the show this year, there may be more out of town dealers in attendance than usual.

With Charmy attending the show, it just got a lot better. She has a very nice inventory of "Pennys".

I will have to bring my Lincoln Dansco and see if I can find some upgrade coins.

I used to go when I lived up in the bay area. Fun little show ... you can see everything there is to see in under an hour. McIntosh usually has a table there which makes it worth while.

So its been very busy here this morning, I was actually slammed for a while which is ver refreshing for these tougher times! I got to meet several forum members in person, Sanction, Becoka, Lyds and a couple others. I'm glad I came here! And tonight I'm having dinner at Massimos with some of my favorite people. Massimos is a nice Italian restaurant which was recommended to me. I went there last night to scope it out and ended up having dinner in the bar. Great food and I even met some regular bar patrons who taught me how to play some fun dice games. The show is dying down now which is typical this time of day. Looking forward to seeing Todd from Bluccphotos tomorrow so I can give him some more coins to photograph. Hopefully tomorrow will be good too.

I went to the show for a couple of hours today.

Compared to past shows, this one was absolutely packed. Why, I have no idea.

I met Becoka and The Penny Lady at the show. I gave Becoka a set of toned MS silver Roosies of mine for him to photograph (when he finishes he is going to post pics on the forums).

Charmy has some gorgeous toned copper. I am in love with a 1912P MS Cent toned a lovely blue color. She has posted pics of that coin on the forums. It would look good in my Lincoln Dansco next to the 1913P, 1915P and 1916P toned Lincolns I picked up from her at the spring Santa Clara show.

Just have to figure out how to scrape up the dough to pay for it.

Sanction, it was nice seeing you again, and it was especially great seeing all you other forum members whom I hadn't met yet, now I can finally put faces with your user names! And I'm glad you like my coins. I especially enjoy hanging out/chatting with other toned copper lovers! But WHOAAA Sanction, you left something out! Perhaps you forgot that I told you I was keeping that particular 1912 for my own set - I was just showing it to you because it was so pretty and I happen to have it with me since Todd is picking up some coins from me tomorrow to photograph. I bought that coin on Ebay and copied their photos so I do have photos on my computer, but I haven't yet posted them on the forum. So, in any event, sorry, but that beauty is NOT for sale!!! :-)

I was there for most of Saturday. Attendance appeared okay especially in the morning and many dealers reported satisfying levels of retail sales. The show turned out to meet my expectations...I didn't buy much and didn't sell much. I may consider setting up at this show again beginning next year.

So I just returned from the Fremont show. It ended up being an EXCELLENT show, very crowded on Saturday, lots of buying and selling, both by dealers and collectors! And, as I mentioned in my post above, it was really great to see the several forum members who stopped by to say hi. Then Sunday, which is usually VERY slow during a typical 2-day show, was also very busy as well. Since this was the first time I've set up in Fremont and summer months being slow for coins, I went there with low expectations, especially after coming off the very slow, not well attended San Diego show last weekend, so I was very pleasantly surprised that this show was one of the best smaller shows I've had all year. Vince Lacariere from Fremont Coin Gallery definitely puts on a great show - fair bourse fees, lots of advertising, same location for 30+ years, easy access right off the 880 freeway, etc. Even with the 6 hour drive each way, I definitely look forward to setting up there again next year!

And better than the great sales, I picked up one of the most amazing errors I've EVER seen, truly! Actually, I traded my 1869/69 NGC MS66 RB (plus received additional cash) with a customer for this coin, so you can get an idea of how much I wanted to own this little error! Luckily, Todd (bluccphotos.com) was meeting me at the show on Sunday to pick up some more coins to photograph for me, so I was able to give him this fantastic error and will be able to post photographs soon. However, I hated not being able to go home with this sweet new purchase so I could show it off at my local monthly coin show (Anaheim/Embassy Suites) this coming Sunday.

So, teaser time - stand by folks, I will be posting photos of this fantastic neat error in a new thread sooooon!

I attended it for 3 years straight while I was stationed at the Naval Postgrad School in Monterey, CA. That was over 10 years ago, but as I recall it was a nice show.

    Charmy,

For some reason I thought that the 1912P Lincoln was in your inventory of coins for sale. My mistake. I am jealous that it will be in your collection instead of mine. Stunning coin it is, simply stunning.

It was a pleasure to meet you again on Saturday.

You talking about the purple people eater 1912?

Sorry I missed meeting everyone. I thought the show was nice, good traffic. I came home empty handed which is ok. I guess not completely empty handed since I have a few of Charmy's coins to play with.

I was there Sunday and enjoyed the show a great deal. Like Charmy said, it is a small show but very well attended. It appeared to be quieter Sunday than what was reported on Saturday but still had a good turn over of people and business was being conducted. Finally found a 1882 half dollar, thanks to the help of Peter Macintosh who directed me to Alistair Skinner who was great to work with and is now looking of an upgrade and a quarter to go with it.

Well run show and though 2 hours away, worth the drive.

I brought my father to the show. He doesn't collect coins, but if he did, I think he would be a darksider as he likes some of the more esoteric designs.

But he got bored after about 10 minutes and walked home (he lives only a few blocks away).

I've only been to the Fremont show for a few years, but it was pretty crowded with folks this time.

I'd say I spent much of my time oogling over Charmy's coins. She pulled one IHC toner out of a 2x2 so that we could see it's full color under the lights. I wish I had a set of nice large cents. I've got three of them in my Dansco 7070, but nothing really special.

Came close to getting some ancient gold, but decided to continue to wait, watch and look.

Was looking for any medal that would fit well with my current collection but I didn't see one.

But mainly, I had to cut the show short because I tweaked my back earlier in the day and any sort of bending over was painful. Fortunately, I took it easy for the rest of the day and the pain went away quickly. Those 'attic crawls' can be very difficult as one gets older. I guess i'm glad I got out of there safely!

I sort of feel bad that I came away empty handed. However, it did seem like a busy show!

    blu62vette:

The purple people eater 1912P is the one.

Charmy also showed me a pair of MS 1972 P Lincolns that were of the purple people eater variety. One was a regular coin, the other was the double die variety. Quite a nice pair of toned bookends.

The Fremont show is always fun to go to, and it's always fun to see many of the dealers you like in one small room. I'm saving up my money for the ANA in Los Angeles, though.
