Wow, I was going to bid on Some Dimes But...

fcloudfcloud Posts: 12,133 ✭✭✭✭
Here is a link to Teletrade. I was going to bid on some of the Mercury Dime varieties, but wow those things are going for Mercury (farther away than the Moon image) money.

I didn't realize but people must collect the plate coins or something. Either that or I way under estimated what the varieties are worth.

Please share you 10 cents worth (2 cent x 5 image ).

slap me back to reality.

teletrade allows the owner of the coin to bid up the coin and make it appear as if people are actually interesd.
a hidden reserve so to speak
may the fonz be with you...always...

They are all way above what they started out at. The one I wanted started out at 20% lower than it is now. It is way over what my minimum would have been, so I'm out. If the seller is bumping all their stuff, they are doing it to a bunch. Not only Mercury Dimes but I saw plate cents, too.

  • I'm not extremely surprised by the numbers. Probably an owner shill, but they are very specialized and tough to find. There are some lazy collectors that will not seek unattributed examples and will search out the already holdered ones. Its a time factor for some of the more wealthy people compared with the money. Maybe theres 2 or 3 of those guys going at it also.

And some believe as many as half the coins in any auction are owned by the house, making it a retail sale venue with a hidden reserve, aka "as a waste of time." Sometimes the reserve prices are way above typical retail too. Some observe the same coins get relisted time after time. A real live consignor would pay big fees to do that, so it is likely the house.

I'd guess 90% of the coins getting bid up, show "no sale" tomorrow. If the same coins show up several more times (five or more) in future auctions, it would be strong evidence that they are house owned.

  • Not only on the Mercury side. Looking at a few Roosys is the same way.
The owner must feel Anacs is the new GOLD.

Bill, did you look at the 1947 S/S. One sold in May for $41.00; the one they have up tonight is upto $975.00, and this one is not one of the plate coins (at least they don't say it is and it's not maked on the holder).

I looked at the Roosies, They are way out of line and I would give 10-1 that they are inflated reserves
and will not sell. The ANACS 1947S DDR MS-64 is at $1450...I'll sell you a PCGS 1947S DDR MS-65 for a 1/4
of that amount. My max bid on the ANACS was $45.

......and whomever owns them makes Teletrade look silly-

I did not check yet , but like most I would bet few- if any sold at those absurd reserve's

    fcloud,

It has to be input errors. No one in there sane mind would put that high of reserves.
Looking at the past coin sales would tell you someone was fishing for the big one.
Your also right in the fact that none of the roosy's where rare.

I haven't bought a coin on Teletrade for almost a year; however, I bought a proof Mercury dime tonight for very reasonable money. I'm shocked.

I USED TO shop Teletrade A LOT! Those days are gone forever.

FWIW, as a well established customer, I am quite aware of how

Teletrade operates and as long as they persist in the current

    manner - COUNT ME OUT!

    Nuff said.

Interestingly, none sold as predicted by some of you. I wonder why they would start so high and bump them even higher. What a wasted fishing excursion for that seller (maybe I should say wasted whaling excursion)?

  • Come on guys settle down! You bid what you are willing to pay and disregard the rest. If you dont get it so be it. Move on. There are still good coins to be had on Teletrade. Not much different than sifting thru the junk at coin shops.

Yeah but, someone is going to get burned and that hurts the hobby and market. So it's good to post this stuff to hopefully alert others. Obviously, the seller got burnt, only reason why the prices are high. Can we blame the registries for the problems the seller's having?

I see the same batch ended tonight with no sales. Last I looked they were way out of my range.

Below is an example of a coin that is offered every few weeks on Teletrade. I've lost count of the times it has appeared - 10 times seems like a safe, conservative guess. BTW it is available again tomorrow night.

    edit for spelling

The same batch ended again tonight. I wonder if anyone will ever bid on them. The are just simply being bumped way to hign in my opinion.

I had bid on some of these for higher than what the last bid seems to be now. Man, am I glad I didn't win any. I found most some of them raw for a lot less money (including the grading fees I paid).

It sure is interesting seeing them come and go, and come and go again. I bet they wish they took some of the bids a few months ago.
