I'm of the opinion that many, if not most, of these Mercs and Roosevelt dimes that are found with this color in the fatty NGC holders actually obtained the color from the holder over time.

i have heard that theory before Tom (also, same goes for early ANA--pre ANACS slabs)

is it the sulphur from the paper label that produces the toning? the reason i ask this is because those early ANA slabs tone strong on the coin at the 12:00 position (the part closest to the paper label)

I would concur with Tom. It is interesting however how some stayed white. Perhaps the seal was bad on only some?
  • Or it could happen if they were squeezed hard on the top ortion at some point in their lives. A lot of those holders have quite a bit of flex at the top.

Or there just could have been more original paper rolls submitted at the time. Have to ask some old timers if they remember seeing that color on end of roll coins.
