3,000 hit countdown Jeter / Griffey ..... and even Ivan ???

softparadesoftparade Posts: 9,271 ✭✭✭✭✭
Derek Jeter - 353 to go. image and barring a catastrophe will be the only Yankee to reach 3,000.

If he stays 100% healthy and only misses a handful of games to rest he has an OUTSIDE shot at reaching 3,000 very late next season. The safe bet is sometime in the first half of the 2011 season.

Also, Ken Griffey Jr - 268 to go. Will he last?

I think Jeter is a no brainer. I would love to see Griffey make it but who knows if he can last. Imagine what his stats would have been if he remained healthy?

My feeling is that Griffey is likely to retire at the end of this season. He won't get to 3,000 is any case.

I really would like to see the kid become another 500/3000 player. Probably not as his career is winding down fast. Jeter will long surpass 3000. Both are easy HOFERS. Both without controversy and both cherished by fans and media. Very refreshing these days.

He's already discussed the possibility of retiring after this season, and he's struggled mightily at the plate this season even though he's hit cleanup a lot of the time (only 27 RBI, .219 BA and .392 SLG% in 72 games)...no way he plays another 3 seasons, you can book it.

I am a Griffey fan, and believe he was hands down the best player of the 1990s and is a first ballot lock for the HOF, but I've seen many HOFers hang on past their period of effectiveness and Junior is right at that point right now.

Griffey looks extremely finished right now.

I said a couple of years ago that Jeter had an outside shot at Rose's hit record, and that Arod was on Steroids. I was right about Arod.

I have this feeling that Jeter is going to try for the record. He is having a very nice season, again.

With another 100 hits this year, he is at 2,747 at age 35.

I could see him averaging 190 hits for the next four years(age 36-39), and that would put him at 3,507.

Then he plays the season where he turns 40 years old in June. He would have to average 187.25 hits at age 40,41,42, and 43 to get it. WHich would be very tough...but if he hung on for two more seasons(age 44 and 45), OR if he averaged 198 hits from age 36-39, it could be interesting.

His legacy is high already, but my goodness, everybody in the Bronx would have erections the size of Paul Bunyon if Jeter got the hit record.

I really can't see Jeter hanging on into his mid-40s to try and get the record. We are discounting the possibilty of injury too. I used to think he had a shot at Rose, but I don't think so anymore. The bigger question I have is with Arod and Tex at 3B/1B for the forseeable future, where do they move Jeter when the last bit of range he has left is gone? Something NY has to think about a few years down the road.

3,500 hits would put Jeter at # 6 all time. Behind the likes of Pete Rose, Ty Cobb, Hank Aaron, Stan Musial, and Tris Speaker.
Not shabby company at all. Speaker is at 3514 so it is quite possible Derek will be in the top 5 leaderboard when all is done.

And just for the fun of it, Jeter is right now at #69 on the hit list.

Yeah, I didn't spend more then 30 seconds on the math. I figured another 100 hits this season if all goes great and then a bit over 200 next season if all goes great. So, if he plays pretty much every day as I stated earlier he will be 40 or 50 short at the end of next season. BUT, its not like I tried to explain that he has a good shot at 3000 come next October. image

I say June of 2011 is a good bet image

Really don't think Grif will play next year, his body language and statements of late hint retirement...he is finished now anyway and should retire...at most he will play one more year for a swan song, but no way he gets to 3,000 hits...M's got to do better for cleanup option than Griffey at this point, much as I loved Griffey as a player.

Griffey as the greatest centerfielder of all time? Better than Willie Mays or Ty Cobb? Hmmmmm... I dunno about that.

Now here's a question for you. Let's just say that Jeter plays five more years and finishes somewhere in the neighborhood of 3500 hits with a lifetime batting average of .315-.320 and wins another World Series or two. Any chance he eclipses Seaver for highest percentage of HOF votes?
