My ol' man served on the old Enterprise (CV-6) during the early years of WWII, radioman on a torpedo bomber. Man, did he have some stories. He told one story of an old boy who got shot making his run across some ships anchored in a crater's bay and made it up and over the crater wall, leaving the scene. The crew bailed out OK, but the pilot later said he thought he was going to get killed by all the falling liferafts as the rest of the squadron came up and over the crater too and spotted the wreck.
Then there was the time they were coming back from a mission and his pilot refused to take a third waveoff. He crash landed, all were OK. There wasn't enough fuel left to get a measurement, prior to the court martial. All charges were eventually dropped.
