1964 SMS Jefferson... What say you... oh gurus of the step? POLL

While doing my daily search of possible additions to the hoard, I noticed THIS AUCTION over at B&M for a 1964 SMS 68 Full Step example.

Knowing there are some Jeffs out there with damage to the step detail with a full step designation... yes, I know the rules about cuts on the steps.

I have to ask...

1. Is this a Full Step coin?

2. Would you plop down the $6 - $8K needed to own this example only using this picture as your guide?

3. Did PCGS give the coin a pass at the time of grading?

4. If cracked out today, what grade do you think it would receive from the graders?

And finally... is anyone going to be at this auction? I'd love to have someone actually view this coin in hand and report back on the step detail.

Thanks!

I suspect a mechanical error as I was under the impression they did not designate

full steps on SMS or proof coins

(but I remember those 1994 reverse yellow Jefferson collection nickels have designation)

I need to check population reports

how much more is this coin worth with steps?

Nope, for these SMS coins they designated the steps. Funny, how they didn't for all of the rest of the 65 - 67 SMS coins.

Pop reports say there are 6 in MS68FS and 1 in MS68.

Price difference is... 11K for the 68FS version, 6K for the non-fs version... out of the PCGS price guide. Many of these were graded and sold in 2003 - 4 timeframe, if I remember correctly.

A fully struck coin with all detail visible is a neat thing in a business strike. Not so much in a specimen strike. JMO. The damage on the steps compromises the designation for this coin to me regardless of what is printed on the holder. Others will surely disagree.
