Am now listed as melvin289, was on for years as rmoss. Computer change at work messed up my log ins. I am doing fine but had to cut back on collecting due to economy. Our hours have been cut to the bone. I still lurk but with compamy restrictions on internet usage never sign in here anymore. I have a few registry sets under r. moss. My main interest is classic commems. Hello everone.

Don't know if I'd call myself a lurker but I definitely post a whole heck of a lot less than I used to. Still come to the site daily though.
  • MercMerc Posts: 1,646 ✭✭
I used to post something once or twice a day. Then I became tired of the posts. Most topics had been repeated many times. Then I find the, "look at my new coin and guess the grade", posts boring. If I have a question, I can usually find the answer in one of my coin books. When I asked here, I had replies from people who were just guessing.

Not much traffic in or out of the collection lately & hit a kind of ceiling in terms of interest.

RYK, FWIW, I find I'm drifting into that same boat, slowly but surely. I'm even :::gasp::: toying with the idea of putting the collection on a diet and dropping it down to a true box of twenty. Please note, I said "toying" with the idea. It's also possible I'll just sit on the sidelines, maybe doing minor insignificant fun stuff, like bruised and battered clad .25¢ found in circulation ~black beauties~ as I call them (How do some of these coins get so encrusted with original dirt? I've noticed they're actually rather rare, in true filthy but legible condition. I doubt anyone but someone desperate for vending machine change would ever want to steal a Dansco looking like the one I'm putting together). The condition gems and scarce items don't really have to go anywhere. They could sit for years. Or they could be traded for bullion, or.... I'm still lazily thinking about it.

I think a lot of these spend years under a washer at a laundromat
or in the ground. Others get under the woodwork somewhere and
can turn dark if the conditions are right.

I've got a set of the most worn clad quarters I can find. I'll use a dark
coin if it's extremely worn but usually prefer problem free, non-cull
coins with excessive wear. These are surprisingly scarce too.

You just might kick yourself later if you don't keep a set of the nicest
coins you see as well. You'll remember some of those high grade
coins you see and might never find another.

cartwheel, I don't know who George Eliot is. I've always attributed that quote to anonymous. I started posting here three years ago and one other poster thought that it was Abe Lincoln who voiced it first....but alas that was not the case.

If you can back up that attribution, I'd be happy to change my sig-line! image

As a Chrysler Employee, I've been caught up in this whole Bankruptcy/ Bailout thing for what seems like forever. My place of employment ( Newark Assembly Plant in Newark, Delaware ) shut down in January. Being on unemployment since January 30th, I've really been on a wild coaster ride - believe me.

On June 29th, I reported to Warren Truck Assembly, in Warren, Michigan. Currently I'm on a 2 week vacation but I'll be back in Warren on the 27th.

Haven't posted much lately. While in Michigan I didn't have easy access to the internet. Lately I'm living on a Chrysler related forum where it's like this place used to be - lots of taunting and name calling. A wild and crazy place.

The biggest change I've gone through lately is the storage of my Coins in a big Safety Deposit Box. I can no longer just open my small home safe and admire the Coin Collection. Out of sight, out of mind, that's for sure.

I'm finding myself becoming much more interested in the resurgence and survival of my employer than any interest in slabs of plastic. Guess that's the way it should be. Without Chrysler, I'm without a job.

Got laid-off from one flying job in October - then got some fantastic help from fellow CU forumite & pilot GFourDriver getting another flying job, but due to corporate downsizing that job went away as well a few months later. Been doing some very infrequent part-time contract work and living off of the great state of Utah since late January. Lost the house and had to move. Spend most of my time sending out resumes and searching online for jobs, with an occaisional glance at CU forums.........

Yesterday I had my first interview since being laid-off in January - still waiting on the verdict. Hopefully it works out and can have some discretionary income to spend on coins once again!

I hope that we've seen the darkest days of this economy behind us & hope we never see times like this again!
