1940 Blue Jefferson could it grade higher?

Steel blue toning, any scratches or marks are on flip not coin. Is there a chance for a 66 or 67?

Any thoughts?

Unfortunately, all I got are red X's for pictures due to the military censorship of the photobucket around here, but hope others will chime in for you.

Only five more months of sentence to serve though...

    "GEM PROOF"

    "Mint State 65"

    Interesting 'grade', don't you think?

(Watch for hairlines- probably what prevented it from grading higher and, I agree with the first line of the insert but not the second.)

If all of the scratches are truly on the "slab" then it would likely have a hot at 66. I believe it's collectibility is enhanced by being in it's current "slab".

I'll see if I can attach them via CU and hopefully they'll show up for you.

I love the slab as well. I have never seen one with the small off-white tags before. All the ones I have seen are blue and are larger in size.

Is it blue or PVC contamination green?

I would sell intact (to Hall slab collector) or remove and acetone soak - depending on mirrors, it could go 66
  • That nickel sure looks familiar. If it is the one I had I felt it had a good shot at 66. I compared it to other coins of the same date but in various grades and holders.

It looks like a proof, but the insert is giving a grade of MS65. If proof, it depends on the hairlines.

  • I purchased the coin in the late 70's from Bowers & Ruddy Galleries, they graded it a 69 talk about your grade inflation! In the early 80's David Hall ran a promotion where you could send in your coins in for review and if they felt the coins were 65 or higher they would slab and give you the choice of selling to DHRC or keeping the coins.

    Thanks to all that responded.

Thanks Robb, now I can see them.

    Cone,

I see quite a few early Jefferson proofs that tend to have that style of toning, in fact, my 41 PF67 looks just like that one, I think.

As someone previously said, I think you've got to look at the hairlines, which to me, in the small PCGS pictures, looks like they might have a few in the reverse field on the right.

I think you've got a coin that, if it didn't upgrade, would probably bring you more money in the holder it currently resides in.

And with the tight grading PCGS has been giving to Jeffersons over the last couple of years, if it's a possible 65 with a shot at 66, it will probably 65.

All that being said... I like the coin and the holder. I'd probably be a bidder along with a number of others around here, if it went up for auction.

Hope this helps... and again... Thanks Robb for the assist.

Please, do not dip, strip or remove this coin from the capsule. Once disturbed you can never go back.

There are collectors of these old type grading packet’s which pre-date the more modern plastic slabs.

Hard to say what this one would grade in today’s standards, but looks like mid-range 60’s +

This is a piece of history.

  • Thanks for the advice I'll leave the coin as is. Steve, if I plan on selling it I'll give a heads up on the BST forum.
