Am I allowed to ask a Barber Quarter question??? I think I am, so I will.

Is there any significance to the listing I've seen in a few publications which refer to the 1900 and 1901 P's with the new reverse?? Is it something worth looking for??

Only if the coins are brought to you at the store in a potential bulk deal...then you are obligated to look for it...

Otherwise...you should not look for it...and just put all the coins out in one of your cases... then a forum member can come into the store and find it...buy it...and then run home and post on the forum about how they "ripped" a cherrypick at your store...

Oh...wait...that's right...it's not your store...you just work there... well, you get the drift of what I mean...

Sorry Al...I just could not help it...I had to write this post...

(edited to add --- Remember to look at the Reverse...under the eagle...somewhere down there you might see a letter...it is called a mintmark...be sure to check that, as well...or the posse is gonna come and hunt you down...imageimage )

  • I would like to ask a question and would like an honest answer please. Why do you keep writing threads about this coin?

this thread has nothing to do with "THAT" coin, it is about two different reverses used on coins dated 1900 and 1901. there was a change made during the latter part of 1900 and evidentally some of the 1900 dated coins used that new reverse. i'm simply wondering if it's anything significant and if there is any value associated.

wow, a guy makes an honest mistake which is kind of out of his hands and people still continue to poke fun or ridicule him.

Don't have an answer for you Keets, I don't know anything about barbers, but had to comment.
  • Ok thanks for clearing that up for me.

  • OK...serious answer...

I know that the 1900 has two Reverses...one has the wing tip even with the top of the E...on the other, the wing tip extends beyond the E towards the rim... is there a premium for one over the other? Not that I know of...

Coin Values lists both BUT does not offer any values for the 2nd one (same with the "2nd" reverses on the 92 coins)...

May have been referring to me... but in truth, I was not poking fun at keets... rather, I was poking fun at some of the "other" folks on this forum...

Please excuse me...I do not wish to divert or hijack the thread...

I just couldn't help myself...I'm from Joisey...we're all wise guys here...ya know? image

both you guys are OK in my book. my skin is pretty thick and life has taght me how to work my way through without making toooooooo many enemies or suffering very much. but back to the thread......................

yeah, that's the reverse that i'm talking about. as i said, i've seen it mentioned in a few guides and Breen mentions it but i'm sort of ignorant about the series so i figured i could get some answers here.
  • I have only seen the 2nd Reverses (92-P-O-S and 1900) once...in a full circ set owned by a fellow coin club member... I have looked for these reverses and have yet to find one. This tells me it is likely rarer...however, unless a large group of collectors start getting excited about it, I would guess there will be little to no premium for it.

i had never found one or really looked before, but then last week happened.

a small group of Barber Quarters were included in a buy yesterday and the ended up on my desk today. one was the 1900 with the tip closer to the rim and it caught my eye so i grabbed a book and then checked through our stock and found another one. neither is high grade, G/VG, but i figured i'd better ask and we'll most likely save them.

No premium on either date in either Hub Type.

I originally thought that the 1900 Type 2 reverse [ tip at edge of E ]
was a tad scarcer - but over the years most AU's I've handled were
split between the Ty 2 reverse and Ty 3 reverse.

The 1901 in a Ty 1 OBV are nicer grade for grade than the Ty 2 OBV.
I have only encountered Ty 1 OBV w/ Ty 2 REV. Never have seen a Ty 1 OBV
with a Ty 3 REV. The Ty 2 OBV with Ty 3 REV seem the more common.

I have both types of the 1900 - one AU 58 the other in MS 65.
Also, the 1901 I have both types - both in AU 58.

No one will care except maybe the most dedicated completionist, and even then they won't want to pay a premium either way. Different animal than mintmarks so far as significance goes.
