The coin gift I received today

Good friends of ours have two daughters, 10 and 7. Their family just returned from vacation in Williamsburg, VA, and tonight at church the kids came up to me and gave me a small paper bag with "Colonial Williamsburg" printed on it. Inside was a reproduction of a Virginia halfpenny in gleaming bright copper (stamped COPY) which came in an envelope recounting the history of the coin.

Have to tell you I was quite touched that they would think of me on their vacation and seek out something that I would enjoy within their meager budget. I've always been one to discourage coin gifts (you know what I mean... won't be the right grade, not something I collect, they probably overpaid, would be something I already have, etc.) but this is the exception to the rule. They are great kids.

Not my photo, but identical to what I got...

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.
