What New Set Challenge Are you Contemplating?

and in what grade?

I'm thinking about a Barber Dime set in either XF or AU.

How 'bout you?!?

I've been having fun with Capped Bust Quarters for a little while, but I never really thought of doing a set. I own 3 dates in 3 different grades...they might not match up too well image

I need less than 70 coins for a complete set of 20th century circulating coins, sans the early commems. Naturally, these are the most rare and expensive so I doubt I'll ever complete it. image

    Always thinking about these two:

    1. CBH in F-VF condition with original, problem free surfaces.

    2. Large cent date set in uniform-ascending grades (probably P01 for the 1793 progressing to late year Braided Cents in AU-BU condition.)

I'll never finish my type set and I am pretty happy about that.

Upgrading our seated dollars once the final four are found, that in itself should count as a new challenging set! image

No new challenges for me. Selling off most of my coins to focus on my Lib $2.50 set.

The list of coins below make up the type set I've been working on for a while now. And I want to get nice, pedigreed examples of each. I think that's enough of a challenge. image

I'm slowly working on a complete Charlotte mint set of $1, $2 1/2, & $5. The set will most likely be short the exotic '49-C Open Wreath $1 gold, since there are only 4 examples confirmed to exist.

MidLife Youve set quite a task for yourself there...as you may realize.

Id imagine your screen name will change through this....first to "lateinlifecrisis"..........hopefully youll get them all collected before you need to change it to "afterlifecrisis"

    Ummm....yes.

But, since Ford, Pittman, Roper, the Garretts, the Norwebs and some others built such large collections, with many duplicates...and since I use a fairly loose definition of pedigreed coins that also includes coins plated in major reference books and coins traceable to specific, but lesser-known owners through auction records... the task is not quite as daunting as it seems. And it's a lot of fun!
  • I don't think I will ever finish my bust quarter set. Nice examples seem to have gone stagnant or are way overpriced. I was thinking about starting bust dimes in toned AU.

    1815 PCGS AU53
    1822 PCGS VF25
and an 1818 ANACS XF40 that's at PCGS now that hopefully will cross - fingers crossed!

I'd eventually like the whole set to be XF/AU. They're out there to be sure, but I've seen exactly ONE PCGS XF 1822 for sale in the past few years and I didn't find it terribly attractive.

Nice!!! have you posted pics yet? I know where a PCGS xf 1822 is...when he is ready to sell, I will let you know. the 1815 has got to be nice.

Thinking of doing a seated quarter set. XF-AU for common coins...any other grade for key dates. I hear it is one of the toughest standard sets that exists, I am sure I will never complete it...much like my bust quarters, but I love the challange.

Certainly not a 'new' challenge to me, but one that I continue to pursue, is a 'complete' set of United States half dimes by die marriage. To my knowledge, no one has ever accomplished that feat, by die marriage, since Dr. Daniel W. Valentine did so in 1931. Most half dime collectors tend to specialize in a specific series, but few if any collect all half dime series. When Valentine published his monograph on the series, there were 30 known die marriages for the Flowing Hair and Draped Bust half dimes (one has since been delisted), today there are 32, and I have 17. For the Capped Bust half dimes, in 1931 there were 69 known die marriages, today there are 92, and I have 91. And in 1931 there were 257 known die marriages for the Liberty Seated half dimes, today there are more than 400, and I presently have more than 400. I have more or less resigned myself to the fact that I will likely never own either a 1792 half disme or an 1802 half dime, but all of the others are certainly on my radar screen.

I know you're joking, but I'd like to get a set of Presidential Dollars from circulation, one each regardless of mint mark/edge orientation. It got a lot harder after the USPS phased out stamp machines in my area that use real money - they are all credit card only ...

I'm not joking. I know the set isn't as glamorous or as challenging as any classic coin set (I'm working on a 19th century type set too). But I buy the presidential dollars by the 1000 coin brick (sometimes two bricks) (Denver Mint flavor out here) and sort through them looking for MS67 coins. I put the best one I find in a little blue Whitman folder. I send the next couple to a forum member in exchange for a P that I put in the same blue folder. The other MS67 candidates, I put in nylon square rolls in hopes of sending the to PCGS someday. I do the same with Statehood quarters but got in too late to ever hope to complete a set.

All the coins that don't look like 67 candidates just go back to the bank or into circulation.

I find this is a really cheap way to look at a bunch of coins under a microscope. I find it relaxing and educational. The blue folder is something my daughter will hopefully develop an interest in after another 3 or 4 years. Maybe we can finish off the set together. Perhaps the folder and collection will be sort of keepsake for her - you know, "Dad and I put this set of presidential dollars together," sort of a thing. If not, there will be enough dollars in it to buy a six pack of beer for ol' dad.

I find this sort of activity keeps my interest going for my 19th century type set.

A mini Carson City gold type set - $5, $10 and $20 Libertys. I just completed a Morgan CC set, so I feel like a gold set is the next step. I guess I'd like to add a CC Trade Dollar, too.

I've considered collecting the _initials in-relief within serrated borders_ counterstamps of silversmiths &c on early coppers. Doubt I'll start anytime soon, but it'd be a cool project. The problem is there are way too many cool things to collect.

Flirting with the ideal of a 1909-S Lincoln Grading Set to go along with my 1908-S IHC set... but will probably finish my 1909 Mint set first
  • Its New Orleans coins for me. A complete design type set. 35 coins, a box of 20 x's 2. Leaves me 5 spots for dupes, and/or related coins I think should be included. The Confederate half dollar will be in there for sure.
Some rare coins in this set and afew budget busters, for me anyways.
Im shooting for grades in XF45-AU55 for the silver coins, and VF20-XF40 for the gold coins. These are just guides really. Im going to be looking for coins that drip with originality, eye appeal, and just choice surfaces, regardless of the assigned grade.

This is going to be the only collection I focus on for the time being. Id like to get into afew other areas of numismatics, but thats for later. Have to save some stuff.
