This is interesting and probably only worth more to me.

In my never ending OGH research I came upon a great find. I know its buy the coin not the holder but this one turns out to be quite scarce, at least for me. Just part of the hunt, whatever works, to each their own, I know this will hold zero value to most, but is quite rare, at least for me.

This coin sold at Heritage auction in 2/28/2005 for $59.00 including buyers fees.image,

Not a rare piece, not a rare coin, just a scarce date, grade, combination.

Then Hertiage sold it again 5/03/2005 three months later for $175.95, $116.00 more than first time sold , notice the coin turned more in the holder in those three months.

I was high bidder tonight for the same coin, four years later with a winning bid of $65.00 fees included. What does all this mean, there are 448 total 1957 D coins graded MS 66 FBL or higher, 320 MS 66 FBL, 117 MS 66, 9 MS 67 FBL, and 2 MS 67. Better pictures...image

In all of my research the OGH population looks to be about 5% total coins left graded still in original holders, if the high end of 10% taken that would be less than 50 coins possible 1957 D MS 66 coins in OGHs. @ 5% est less than 25 total in OGHs. In 2005 there were 300 MS 66 FBL coins lowering the est to about 21 coins total in OGHs. It is safe to estimate 2 - 4 probably maxium in 1957 Ds remain in Old Green Rattlers. I know those #s are probably meaningless to most of you, but to me I hit the jackpot, I honestly feel this coin in this holder is maybe one of a kind, with few brothers, or sisters. I know buy the coin not the holder, but this truly is a rare combination, at least to me.

So let me get this straight. Until you saw it in tonight's auction for all you knew this year/mm in an OGH could have been extinct?

Congrats on the addition to that set.

Not exactly I have been watching this auction for about ten days, my eyes lit up when I saw it knowing it was a rare combination. Knowing most wouldn`t look at it the same way I do, I kept my fingers crossed it was just another Franklin to everyone else. In an OGH it is scarce in a Rattler pretty rare at MS 66. Not important to many but a diamond in the rough to me. Simple but made my day...image

You should send it in for trueview image

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

the migration pattern of the franklin half is fascinating!
  • Actually, that is cool! I too, like playing with the numbers and possibilities/percentages and looking for the otherwise quirky collecting themes.

    Neat find - Congrats!

  • All the stars lined up tonight, this coin does not have a great deal of dollar value, but in its own way is a rare piece...still a little stunned the price wasn`t driven up more, and happy at the same time, as it is a perfect inexpensive find...sometimes the little things mean much more than spending big bucks...this one really made my day....

Very cool post. Nice find and even better given it's history.
I'm trying to stock up on rattler Franklins myself. They sure seem affaordable right now.

Here is the moral of the story as I see it :

Things that are round go around.
Things that are not, tend to go up and down.
Nothing is square in the world of coins.

You are correct early on FBL designations were not used, the thing on this year not a big difference between FBL and non FBL prices. I still have to finalize research pop #s to pin point quanity but all research points to an extremly low #.

Heritage auctions in 4 years there was only one 57 D rattler sold, this one three times, also 12 twelve total old green holders out of 300 57 Ds sold that is just about 7% coins sold in OGHs. But out of the 12 total a few coins sold a few times actual different coins was about 7. Meaning % wise it is closer to 2-3% in OGHs.

Yea I know that is pretty crazy but fits my personality..
