I was going to wait this out and try to snipe it but decided against it, my knowledge of test coins and patterns is not good enough to warrant spending money on something I cannot verify as authentic. What do you all think?
its probably a counterfeit that was struck in copper and then plated in gold. the gold layering came off, and now its just a counterfeit double eagle struck in copper
Well, before we rush to judgment the seller does say there are no returns unless the item is not as described, he/she describes it as "1900S, DOUBLE EAGLE, TEST DIE COIN/TOKEN, SUPERB CONDIT".
If it were to arrive and was deemed a counterfeit, or not as described you could return it. They have 99.9 feedback with over 4k sales, seems like they are not in the business of swindling anyone. If it is not as described I would bet they would take it back. I'm curious what everyone thinks on this one. I really like it, kinda neat.
look at the reverse lettering... its all wrong. im almost sure its a contemporary counterfeit. Also, name one pattern that was actually struck in san fran and has an S mint mark? I think the only one is the 1915 Pan Pac half in gold... and im not sure if that has an S on it. Why would a pattern be made in the middle of the series with an S mintmark? San Fran had no engravers to do that kind of work.

ahhh, that never crossed my mind but now that you mention it ... there does seem to be a bit of brighter gold coloring in some of the recesses of the lettering and a few other areas. If it was plated at some time they did a bad job if that much of the plating came off.
I've seen these counterfeits before. Save your money. TD
