Here are some images of a coin I picked up on ebay a few weeks ago. It's an 1823 O. 109 CBH, R. 5+. The first two photos show the toning rather accurately - the last two are the sellers photos, so you can imagine that I'm pleased that the coin in hand has a more natural tone. I consider it to be somewhat of a cherrypick. I figure you just have to sigh a few times and get past the X in the obverse field when rescuing an unattributed R. 5+ from common pool.
I'd be most interested in hearing your thoughts on the coin! Thanks.

The diagnostics include the die cracks near the date, across the breast and through the upper stars and across the cap. The 1st and 3rd As in the reverse legend are missing inside serifs while the 2nd A still retains that inside serif.

You were willing to go one bid higher than I iirc...
Congrats on another find!

I figure I paid about a third of what I might be able to get for it. That's good enough for me.

<< <i>Thanks, Lane. Sorry (again), Speety.

Based on auction records, a similar, but "problem-free," example should sell for around $3000-$3500. Again...tough coin!

<< <i>I'm guessing the "problem" cuts that figure by 60% or so, but have no real sense for how to figure out its value without putting the coin up for auction. >>
These are really tough to price because the problems are unique to the coin and hard to judge against other "problem" examples that have sold.
