I too would like to see the coin in a slab and the resulting grade/opinion. From just looking at the image at least what one can see I would say maybe the engraved initials are actually lite clashes there so common on seated coins as far as grade I really think its AU all the way Either way though I think a return is rational if the buyers opinion is as he stated. I myself when I sell off extras from my own collection I have a return for any reason within 10 days its better to resell it to some one who may have a better appreciation for such a coin, it truly is exceptional in my opinion.
To me a lot of coin collectors are just strange people. I have had very few coins returned over the years. I sometimes look at the price bid and paid and sometimes think to my self that the coin is not worth that to me. A few days later i get a email with the owner saying thanks for the coin it is the nicest coin he has ever seen. A few weeks back i sold a coin ( got killed on ebay) and the guy did not like it. I was glad to get it back. I relisted with different pics and coin more than doubled in price, new owner loves it.
It used to bother me when a coin was returned, now i could care less. Life is to short to be upset over a coin. I have never returned a coin although i should haveat least 30 times. I used to just resell them and go on, but the next one i do not like will go back to the seller from now on.

That is a rational view and makes sense and matches my own experience. It goes both ways too I returned a shield nickle many years ago to a dealer who did not disclose the small planchet defect , he sent my money back before I even returned the coin he was very gracious though we disagreed. I seen it again on the site it was Amazon way back in the day and it sold for more then 50% higher then what I paid so opinions abound on a given coin I think I was right to return the coin but someone else was happy to pay more.

<< <i>it is "no where near AU" and "there are carved initials in the right obverse field."
I disagree.
If this piece isn't satisfying as a perfect AU, I don't know what is. The devices are drenched in mint frost only slightly abraded on the high points.
Comments welcome. >>
All the more reason not to ever offer a "reason" for returning a coin outside of "It's not for me".

Sounds like great advice to me. Thanks.

<< <i>This all should have been handled via PM IMHO. (However I did enjoy the short lived drama. ) >>
Plus, in hand examining always gives you a much better view than a photo does.
