this is what Julian Leidman has to say about that:

"I much prefer adjectival descriptions, rather than numerical. For uncirculated grades of coins, uncirculated would correspond to MS 60, choice would correspond to MS 63, very choice to MS 64, gem to MS 65, GEM to MS 66, superb gem to MS 67, spectacular or nearly perfect to MS 68 or MS 69. Perfect, of course is a 70 grade. These would correspondingly apply to Proofs, as well."
  • Agreed. Generally, Choice BU is a 63, Very Choice BU is a 64.

  • The above posters got it right. I remember the greysheets used to have that described in small print somewhere..

Can somebody post one of those "Ultra Select Premium" BU's that are advertised in Coinage ? image

Well, I sure do appreciate that.

I really didn't know that. I guess because I don't deal very much with uncirculated coins.

So I guess then the adjectival terms would have a somewhat different application in circulated grades? I've seen them applied here and there, but not consistently or accurately as you list for uncirculated coins.

I don't have a pic of one handy, but I believe that's generally a nicely polished AU. image
