Thought it'd be fun to see how some of you have been ripped since first hand stories are so interesting. The other post made me think of some of my rips, but also how I was ripped. I'm not a Dealer, just a Collector that actively buys and sells.
This is the most recent one. Happened a couple mths ago. I inspected several dozen mostly BU morgans and other misc early type coins, writing down my buy price on paper for each peice. Many were slabbed by a small co in England that made it very difficult to deal with having to explain to the Seller why each peice wasn't a 65/66. The seller had a calculator on him and voluntered to add the values while I called them out, so I figured it'd be swell of me to show that I trusted him. We went thru the list twice, each time coming up with the same number. The next day as I was putting everything into my system, I double checked his math. He shorted me $200 exactly, which was hard to do considering the odd values of each peice etc. Anyway, I made a copy of it, mailed it to him and asked him to honor his integrity and return my $200 since it was clearly an addition mistake, and one he created.
Haven't heard back from him. $200 doesn't kill me, but I paid him top dollar and it just irks me to no end that his dishonesty extends that far.
I'm blessed with a lot of lessons learned, LOL.
It's not hard for me to understand how some Dealers become cranky old men looking for a rip every now and then.
Lets hear your stories.
edited to say "He shorted me $200", means he added in an extra $200 to his figures, I paid him that amount too much.
