1921 Merc Dime Opinions Sought

RichRRichR Posts: 3,864 ✭✭✭✭✭

I have the opportunity to buy a slabbed 1921-D strong AU for about $900...BUT it's going into a solid, complete (except for the '16) all MS set.

Should I "settle" for the AU or splurge for a medium tier MS 1921D? Keeping in mind that my rationale for buying a 1921P in the future would be similar, what would you do?

Will I look at those AUs in the future and (based on their neighbors) like them or hate them?

Here's my two cents: Mercs more often than not look absolutely terrible in AU50. That being said, if you can get a nice 55-58 with good luster and just a touch of rub, go for it. It will look good with the rest of the set. An AU50 would stick out like a sore thumb.

I think you should save for the MS one. If you're going to spend close to grand, then save a few hundred more and get a nice 63 or 4. The 21P is about the same in this grade also, as you know. These days, one might just come on the market that you could pull for a nice price. Not like 2-3 years ago when they were up.

Let these be the highlight of your MS set, aside from the 26S of course.

If you like the coin buy it. I would agree that a 55 or a 58 might fit nicely as well for the price.

With the 1921 (both P and D) are a very tough in MS high grades. I had less than MS for a long time and it took me a long time (like over three years) to find MS63 coins. And you have to pay too much. I think the 1921 is one of the toughest dates in the set.

If you really like the AU coin you can always buy it and upgrade later.

Trade up or trade down, but trade with one goal...
    Having fun trading that way.

I would hold out for an MS coin myself.

I'd take the money I was thinking of spending on an AU, find a dealer who had an MS63 or 64 that I liked, and ask him/her if I could apply it toward a lay-away on their coin.
    When in doubt, don't.

I'd say go for the MS as well.
I went for a G4 '16d, that could be a G6 but not a VG8, and am kind of kicking myself for not going for a VG8 or VG10, or even F12 instead.
I will probably end up with one of those as well, and keep the G4 for down the road, but it is a financial ding while you are holding it if you don't trade it or sell it for the upgrade.

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

If it's a high luster coin which fits well in the set, then buy it.

Just gotta say...although the coin from JJ Teaparty looks very nice...they seem to want $2,369 for it. Last time I checked, $2,369 was not close to $900. But granted, it is FSB.

In this market, what can one realistically expect to pay for a attractive MS-62/63 slabbed '21D Merc?

I'm taking this as a cue for the comic relief portion of our program, so... Current Greysheet shows the 1921-D at $1550 Ask for MS63 and $1700 Ask for MS64 (non-FB).
    When in doubt, don't.

    I wish I could find a solid MS63 for $1,500+/-

    Ditto for the '21P.
