1991-1994 Topps Golden Spikes

Topps produced a card "set" of these for 4 straight years:
1990 Alex Fernandez (1991 Topps)
1991 Mike Kelly (1992 Topps)
1992 Phil Nevin (1993 Topps)
1993 Darren Dreifort (1994 Topps)

Picture of the Mike Kelly

Does anyone have any information on these, or where I could get them? From what I understood they were given away at the Golden Spikes Banquet. I am very interested in these weird, rare Topps releases (ie., the 1990 Topps George Bush). Any help appreciated.

I have these 4. I bought 2 from a dealer in Atlanta and 2 on ebay a long while back. I paid on the average $ 150 or so for each. The Bush card would likely go for $ 2 k +.

Other good odd ball single card Topps issues would be the 1976 and 1991 Joe Garagiola card...and the 1984 #801 Darryl Palmer card, or the 1969 Bowie Kuhn "card"

I have the 1991 Topps set about the Babe Ruth made for TV series. Which if I am correct is the last licensed card of Pete Rose, since I think as part of his ban he's not allowed to appear on MLB licensed stuff. I may be off on that one.

Did some digging, found better pictures of 3 of the 4. Still can't find the Dreifort.

I found these here: Topps Golden Spikes

Looks like you overpaid a bit, but you have all four. Never seen the other 4 you mentioned. Do you have scans of those or of the Dreifort?

What a dreadful crew. None of them had a lot of succeess in MLB. I know Dreifort signed a big contract after a decent year, but was a complete bust due to injury. He was a good hitter. I remember a SI piece on him. He came across as a very likeable guy. Fernandez did ok, but was hurt early. He was washed up before age 30. Mike Kelly was the 2nd player taken in the draft (91?) but never produced. Nevin had the best career of the four, but was slow to develop and was never a star. He did have a couple of nice years-I believe he hit 40 HRs one season. He was easily the most productive of the four.

    Great cards!

I have an Alex Fernandez available for sale if anyone is interested.

It appears that a variation exists on his card as my copy has a registration symbol above the Topps logo, similar to the Storm Davis card in the 1991 base set.

Am I the only one that sees, for a lack of better words, an 'out of place' picture in post #3 (Tuesday July 14, 2009 3:15 PM)?
So basically my kid won't be able to go to college, but at least I'll have a set where the three most expensive cards are of a player I despise ~ CDsNuts

Hi all! New member here... I actually joined just to post on this thread. I love these single issue series cards, and I have tried to compile them all. Just wanted to show this one:

    image

I also have this to go with it... it's the mail-in ballot from the 1994 luncheon:

Would really like to talk about the Nevin... it's the only one I am missing. Would love to buy or trade for it.

Very cool item Scooter. Do you have such ballots for any of the other cards ? How did you come across it ?

I also collect something similar, the Topps Rookie Banquet programs from 1959 to 1967

Thanks Bishop - I found it listed on eBay with a $3 BIN about 3 months ago.

    LOVE those programs of yours!!

With regard to the Golden Spikes cards, I have been actively searching for them for several years with limited success. I had a bit of a windfall earlier this year - someone listed five separate 10-card lots (50 cards total)of the Alex Fernandez Golden Spikes card (all with the "R" above the Topps name at the top). He had them erroneously listed as "Topps Debut promos". I ended up buying them all - 50 copies for $125 total!

Your Nevin card is the first I have ever seen, and it's a beauty. Would love to discuss its availability with you image

I am strictly a Topps/Fleer set/ item collector, and the pictured Nevin is my only copy.

If you have multi copies of the Fernandez card with the r, would be interested. You can pm me if interested in selling one
